What Is a Neural Network?

Imagine teaching a child how to recognize a cat 🐱
You don’t hand them a rulebook like:
“two ears + whiskers + tail = cat.”
Instead, you show examples:
👉 “This is a cat.”
👉 “This is not.”
Over time, they begin to recognize patterns on their own.
That’s exactly how a neural network works.

A neural network is a brain inspired system that learns from data rather than fixed instructions.

Neural networks are powerful but often called a “black box” because we can see the input and output, but not clearly understand how the decisions are made inside.

We’d like to introduce Private AI running Models Locally with Go with William Kennedy a Managing Partner at Ardan Labs and a well-known Go educator and author.

🎉 Bootcamp Advancement Announcement

We’re excited to announce that a select group of participants has successfully progressed from the Selection Phase to the Bootcamp.

After careful evaluation, 50 students have advanced to the next stage.

📌 Selection Criteria

Strict Requirements (Immediate Disqualification if not met):

- Must submit the Final Task
- Must have at least one attendance recorded per session (Since 3 attendances are typically recorded per session, at least one must be present to account for possible internet issues.)

Evaluation Metrics (Used for Ranking):

- Checkpoints and their accessibility
- Demonstration videos (clarity and depth of explanation)
- Meeting deliverable requirements

These metrics were assessed across all sessions (including checkpoints and tasks). After aggregating the results, the top 50 participants were selected to advance to the Bootcamp.

ASTU Data Science Bootcamp: Announcement of the Zindi Challenge

We are pleased to announce the launch of the ASTU Community Financial Inclusion Hackathon as part of our Data Science Bootcamp.

Eligibility:

* Acquire hands-on experience with practical datasets.
* Compete and collaborate with fellow students.

Additional Opportunities:

* A pathway to join the CSEC ASTU Data Science Division is available for students selected for the Bootcamp.
* Students who were not selected for the Bootcamp but have submitted their final Pre-Bootcamp project may also join the CSEC Data Science Division. Continued commitment to the learning journey is encouraged, as performance in this challenge will be evaluated for consideration.
