Indian States Impose Stricter Lockdowns as COVID-19 Deaths Hit Record High

🇮🇳@COVID19Up
: India on Saturday reported its highest ever single-day COVID-19 death toll, as cases continued to rise and states imposed stricter lockdowns.

Tamil Nadu said it would move from a partial to a full lockdown on Monday, shutting public transport and state-run alcohol retailers. Neighboring Karnataka state extended a total shutdown late on Friday.

India is yet to impose a national lockdown as it did during its first wave last year, but around half of all its states have imposed a total shutdown. The rest are under a partial shutdown. SOURCE

Expert Urges Extreme Caution Over Hugs as Lockdown Eases

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿@COVID19Up
: People should take precautions when hugging others, says an expert, amid expectations of a further easing of England's COVID restrictions this week.

Speaking in a personal capacity, Professor Cath Noakes said it would worry her "if we were advocating we could hug all of our friends every time we meet them again" as it would "perpetuate an awful lot of additional close contact that could spread the virus."

"The reality is that when you hug someone you are very close to them and we know the virus is in people's breath and you are very close to that breath at that moment."

She advised that if people are going to hug others, it should be restricted "to very small numbers of close family who perhaps you really value a hug from."

"I think don't hug too frequently, keep it short, try and avoid being face to face, so perhaps turn your face away slightly, and even wearing a mask could help,"
she said. SOURCE

Dr. Fauci: "Unlikely" U.S. Will See COVID-19 Surge in Fall, Winter

🇺🇸@COVID19Up
: Dr. Fauci said Sunday that the U.S. is now unlikely to see a surge of COVID-19 infections over the fall and winter like it did last year, pointing to the widespread availability of vaccines as a "game changer" that would prevent future surges.

"Well, the fact that we have vaccines right now, Chuck, is really a game changer," Fauci told host Chuck Todd on NBC. "I mean, if we get, which we will, to the goals that the president has established, namely if we get 70% of the people vaccinated by the Fourth of July, namely one single dose, and even more thereafter, you may see blips. But if we handle them well, it is unlikely that you'll see the kind of surge that we saw in the late fall and the early winter." SOURCE

Variant Accelerating India's COVID-19 Explosion: WHO's Soumya Swaminathan

🇮🇳@COVID19Up
: A COVID-19 variant spreading in India is more contagious and may be dodging vaccine protections, contributing to the country's explosive outbreak, the WHO's chief scientist said Saturday.

In an interview with AFP, Soumya Swaminathan warned that "the epidemiological features that we see in India today do indicate that it's an extremely rapidly spreading variant."

Swaminathan, an Indian paediatrician and clinical scientist, said the B.1.617 variant of COVID-19 was clearly a contributing factor to the catastrophe unfolding in her homeland.

"There have been many accelerators that are fed into this," the 62-year-old said, stressing that "a more rapidly spreading virus is one of them." SOURCE

Even Bernie Sanders is Not in Favor of Forcing Kids to Get Vaccinated Against COVID-19 for School

🇺🇸💉@COVID19Up
: This week Senator Bernie Sanders said that students should not be forced to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“It’s not my job to tell parents or kids to get vaccinated,” the Vermont progressive told WCAX3. “What we want to do is make sure that it is safe, and I think the evidence seems to suggest that it will be safe.”

Sanders went on to say he would support children getting the vaccine for school if it is deemed safe. His comments come as the FDA is expected to authorize the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for 12 to 15 year olds as soon as next week.

Many colleges and universities have announced they’ll require students to show proof of being vaccinated to return for the fall semester, but there’s been debate about using the vaccine on younger teenagers who are considered low risk to get seriously ill from COVID-19. SOURCE

EU Doesn't Renew Order for AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine

🇪🇺💉@COVID19Up
: The European Union did not renew its contract with AstraZeneca for its COVID-19 vaccine after the bloc accused the pharmaceutical company last month of failing to deliver on its initial contract.

"We did not renew the order after June. We’ll see what happens," European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton told France Inter radio, according to Reuters. He did not, however, dismiss the possibility of an AstraZeneca renewal at a later time.

The EU’s announcement comes amid months of tension between the European bloc and AstraZeneca, after the company twice said it would not be delivering the amount of vaccines to the EU that it was counting on.

The EU sued AstraZeneca last month, alleging the company failed to fulfill its COVID-19 vaccine contract. SOURCE

CDC Makes Bizarre Change to Rules on Reporting COVID-19 "Breakthrough Cases"

🇺🇸💉@COVID19Up: The CDC is changing its rules on the reporting of COVID-19 "breakthrough cases," a key metric in monitoring potentially leaky vaccines.

Starting on May 14, the CDC will no longer report instances of fully vaccinated people testing positive for SARS-CoV-2. Instead, the CDC will only count those who are fully vaccinated, test positive for SARS-CoV-2, and are hospitalized or deceased.

According to the CDC, this change in data collection will "help maximize the quality of the data collected on cases of greatest clinical and public health importance." The CDC appears poised to continue tracking and reporting cases of unvaccinated people who test positive for SARS-CoV-2, even if they are not hospitalized.

Coupled with the decision to only sequence breakthrough cases of SARS-CoV-2 test results with a cT < 28, the upcoming changes to data tracking may complicate data interpretation moving forward.

While the CDC notes that COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases are to be expected, the update concedes that there is only "some evidence that vaccination may make illness less severe."

Woman Died Shortly After Getting COVID-19 Vaccine. Family Says State Investigation Covered It Up.

🇺🇸💉@COVID19Up
: The state of Massachusett’s investigation into a woman’s death shortly after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine ruled that the shot did not contribute to the fatality but she had COVID-19 and suffered other medical complications.

The family of Drene Keyes, a 58-year-old Gloucester resident who died in January, disputes that determination. They paid for an independent medical examination that Keyes’ daughter, Lisa Jones, says conflicts with the state’s findings.

The private investigation, which included an autopsy, indicated negative COVID-19 test results and evidence of a blood clot that investigators believed was linked to the administration of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Keyes received a first dose of Pfizer vaccine Jan. 30 and died shortly after at VCU Tappahannock Hospital. A report documenting her case in the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System said she began having trouble breathing in the parking lot of her vaccination site about 20 minutes after getting the shot. She then began vomiting every 20 to 30 seconds.

The state’s investigation, which did not include an autopsy, ruled she died naturally—of complications arising from hypertensive cardiovascular disease and COVID-19. SOURCE

SARS-CoV-2 Has Undergone More Than 6,600 Unique Spike Protein Mutations

🦠@COVID19Up
: The coronavirus that sparked the COVID-19 pandemic has already undergone more than 6,600 unique spike protein mutations, said Dr Sebastian Maurer-Stroh, executive director of the Bioinformatics Institute at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research.

Viruses mutate whenever there is a "mistake" in the replication process. This could result from an addition, a deletion or a change to its genetic code. If that mistake increases its survival prospects, more copies of that "wrong" replication will survive, and sometimes overwhelm the original version.

For example, the D614G mutation which started to rise sharply in February last year is now found in all samples of the virus, no matter which variant they are.

Variants usually comprise a set of five to 15 mutations that, together, give them some added advantage.

To qualify as a variant of concern (VOC), the mutated virus has to show evidence in fulfilling at least one of these criteria: that it transmits more easily, causes more severe illness, significantly reduces neutralization by antibodies, or reduces the effectiveness of treatment, vaccines or diagnosis. New SARS-CoV-2 Variant That Contains 18 Mutations is More Deadly and Infectious, Researchers Warn

🦠@COVID19Up
: Researchers say they have confirmed that a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 turns out to be a combination of 18 different mutations, including the strains commonly known as the Brazil, British and South African variants.

Moreover, they say the new variant is more deadly and infectious than the original.

“It is as if these variants were evolving,” virologist Renato Santana reportedly said, adding the new variant includes the same genes modified by Brazil’s Manaus, known as P1, British and South African variants.

“It has characteristics in common with the variants that were already circulating in Brazil but it also has new characteristics." SOURCE

Another Peer-Reviewed Study Finds Ivermectin Highly Effective Against COVID-19, but FDA Claims it is "Dangerous"

🇺🇸💊@COVID19Up
: New research is indicating that antiparasitic drug ivermectin is an effective prophylaxis (preventive treatment) and treatment for COVID-19.

"Our latest research shows, once again, that when the totality of the evidence is examined, there is no doubt that ivermectin is highly effective as a safe prophylaxis and treatment for COVID-19," said Paul E. Marik, M.D., FCCM, FCCP, founding member of the FLCCC and Chief, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

"We can no longer rely on many of the larger health authorities to make an honest examination of the medical and scientific evidence. So, we are calling on regional public health authorities and medical professionals around the world to demand that ivermectin be included in their standard of care right away so we can end this pandemic once and for all."

Normally, peer-reviewed research would be enough to give a drug some credibility, but the FDA's strong opposition raises serious questions. SOURCE

WHO Classifies Triple-Mutant SARS-CoV-2 Variant From India as Global Health Risk

🌎🦠@COVID19Up
: A World Health Organization (WHO) official said Monday it is reclassifying the highly contagious triple-mutant COVID variant spreading in India as a “variant of concern” at the global level.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead for COVID-19, said the agency will provide more details in its Situation Report on Tuesday but added the variant, known as B.1.617, has been found in preliminary studies to spread easier than the original virus and that there is some evidence it may able to evade vaccines.

“And as such we are classifying this as a variant of concern at the global level,” she said during a press conference. “Even though there is increased transmissibility demonstrated by some preliminary studies, we need much more information about this virus variant in this lineage in all of the sub lineages, so we need more sequencing targeted sequencing to be done.” SOURCE

Potential New Vaccine May Block SARS-CoV-2 and Variants, Plus Other Coronaviruses

💉@COVID19Up
: A potential new vaccine developed by members of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute has proven effective in protecting monkeys and mice from a variety of coronavirus infections—including SARS-CoV-2 as well as the original SARS-CoV-1 and related bat coronaviruses that could potentially cause the next pandemic.

The new vaccine, called a pan-coronavirus vaccine, triggers neutralizing antibodies via a nanoparticle. The nanoparticle is composed of the coronavirus part that allows it to bind to the body's cell receptors, and is formulated with a chemical booster called an adjuvant. Success in primates is highly relevant to humans.

The findings were published in the journal Nature on Monday, May 10. SOURCE

German Interior Minister Catches SARS-CoV-2 Weeks After Vaccination

🇩🇪💉@COVID19Up
: German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, despite having received a vaccination. Seehofer previously turned down AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine.

Seehofer is “in domestic isolation and currently has no symptoms of the disease,” a spokesman from the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

The 71-year-old minister received his first shot of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine in mid-April. Two weeks earlier, he publicly defied Health Minister Jens Spahn’s call for his fellow cabinet ministers to take AstraZeneca’s vaccine, as public opinion of the AstraZeneca jab was falling, due to concerns it caused blood clots. COVID-19 Infections in India Complicated by Severe Outbreak of Deadly Fungus

🇮🇳@COVID19Up
: Mucormycosis is a deadly, invasive fungal infection, usually involving the sinuses, face, and eyes. Typically this infection, known as mucor, is seen in diabetic patients with poorly controlled glucose levels, or in patients who are immunosuppressed, due to either medications or to an illness leading to a weakened immune system.

When not caught and treated aggressively in its early stages, this fungal infection can invade the brain. Mortality from mucor infections is in the greater than 50% range. COVID-19 infections, especially those in the current disastrous surge in India, have led to a sharp rise in cases of mucor in many hospitals throughout India.

A recent report from BBC News describes how ophthalmologists (eye surgeons) and otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat surgeons) in Mumbai are reporting magnitudes higher numbers of mucormycosis patients who have been seen and treated in the past few weeks compared to those treated in the past several years combined. Many of the patients were two weeks out from their recovery from COVID-19 infections. SOURCE
