Simulation of Airflow in electric aircraft engine
compartments

Electric aircraft are reshaping aviation, and understanding airflow dynamics is
crucial. Simulating airflow within the engine compartment and around the
aircraft exterior is a key to improve efficiency and safety.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) allows to understand complex airflow,
helping engineers prevent overheating by designing efficient cooling systems.
This ensures optimal performance and thermal management. Battery systems,
absence of combustion engines, and thermal sensitivity require innovative
solutions for heat distribution and cooling.

Beyond the engine aerothermal performances, CFD predicts drag, lift, and
maneuverability. Simulating airflow around components refines design to enhance
efficiency, especially without traditional engine exhausts.

Driver’s Cabin Thermal Comfort 🌑

Thermal comfort is not only for passengers, but also for the driver. CFD analysis must be carried on in order to ensure effective cooling/heating in the worst summer/winter scenarios. The main goal is to have a uniform temperature field and try to minimize temperature gradients within the cabin. It is never comfortable to have freezing feet and a burning head ! Below is a video of an unsteady cooling simulation of a cabin from a low-floor light rail. The solar load model was used to take into account the radiation across the windshield and side windows. The driver is not physically represented but its heat rejection is applied on the seat surface.

Super Yacht Aerodynamics

Personally, as a data-oriented person, I think it's cool to see the a union of CFD data in the form of both local raw contours as well as in a summarized fashion, in the same visualization. If we focus too much on local behaviors, then we can divert our attention from important macro/global trends - and vice versa!

More than many other type of ships, yachts need to be unique. In fact, design and comfort are often the main differentiating factors. Therefore, unique
solutions and numerous modifications are absolutely essential ingredients for
designing and building yachts.

Cavitation is a common phenomenon in fluid physics yet it can cause potential damage to flow structures such as pump impeller, valve
body, etc. The simulation is a study around a 4-inch valve under a normal operating condition. By monitoring pressure and other parameters, it is made easier to answer when, where and how the cavitation is formed.

Boat CFD 🚀

Have you ever seen a boat CFD - and what the mesh actually does during the simulation?

🚀 You start with a 6DOF (6 degrees of freedom) approach, meaning that your model can freely move in
space.

πŸ•Έ then you create TWO meshes. One is for the sea - maybe average speed of the boat, maybe wind, maybe waves?

πŸ•Έ The second mesh is fixed to the moving boat.

πŸ›³ In most straight line cases, your boat is "only" moving up and down and rocking in the waves.

🌊 Of course you need a eulerian multiphase approach. And you can refine it! Fluid film captures the
effects wetting the hull and maybe the superstructure of the boat. Lagrangian models are fit for drops that fly around.

CFD = Computational *Fun* Dynamics?

Sometimes a fun simulation reveals some really cool
features.
Autonomous meshing allows CFD engineers to easily and
accurately predict the interaction between fluid flow and deforming boundaries
as demonstrated in this simulation of an inflating balloon. The cut planes show
you the mesh, where cells are dynamically placed exactly where you need them to
capture complex flow structures, and easily in the new volumes created by the
expansion. With each breath, the balloon inflates.

Within Simcenter Star-CCM+ software, the term self-propulsion refers to the simulation of movement within a flow medium in which objects or entities can move on their own based on their design or specified behavior.

Spontaneous motion simulations using STAR-CCM+ can be used
to study the performance of vessels, submarines or autonomous underwater vehicles moving on water.

β˜‘ You can test multiple hull/propeller combinations to find the best efficiency.

β˜‘ You can perform full-scale tests early in the design cycle to ensure critical performance parameters are
met.

β˜‘ You can evaluate performance
in a variety of real-world conditions to determine power requirements in any marine situation.

β˜‘ With quick turnaround, it
allows the simulation to guide the design: By using the virtual disk model to represent the propeller, you can calculate the self-drive points in hours
instead of days.

Rigid Body Motion (RBM) describes the position, velocity and rotational motion of an object. This motion describes how the object moves in a
space. Rigid Body Motion analysis is widely used in engineering applications to understand the motion and behavior of mechanical systems. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ enables a variety of applications using Rigid Body Motion (RBM) modeling. Realistic simulations of moving objects are
indispensable for design improvements and performance analyses. When propeller behavior is to be studied, structural effects, ventilation and cavitation effects, and propeller geometry can be modeled and optimized, which helps to create more efficient designs.

Multiphase CFD for clear vision πŸ€“

Many multiphase applications require accurate, yet efficient treatment of droplets sliding across surfaces.

πŸ’§ Typical use cases include tracing rain droplets sliding on the surfaces of moving vehicles, including windshields, mirrors, and car sensor surfaces.

🌊While it is in principle possible to use the high-fidelity Volume of Fluid (VOF) method, it is very expensive, and for a large number of sliding droplets, the VOF simulation is computationally prohibitive.
πŸ‘©β€πŸ’» To predict the dynamics of these droplets on surfaces, a Lagrangian approach is very efficient, but it is of fundamental importance to take surface tension effects into account with high accuracy.

πŸŽ† With Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 2310 we therefore introduce a new type of Lagrangian phase, so-called wall-bound droplets, and a new particle shape model called Spherical Cap Particles. πŸ₯³ The whole new modeling framework, with its first sub-models, enables you to run simulations with accurate and fast tracking of sliding droplets and rivulets. This results in improved accuracy and speed of water management simulations.

Hydrogen is everywhere these days, including CFD!

In this study, we simulated a dual swirl coaxial injector,
called a HYLON (Hydrogen Low NOx) burner. On the left we've captured an
attached flame condition under low fuel and air flow rates. On the right, the
conditions produce a lifted flame. Lifted flames typically produce less NOx
than attached flames, making it desirable to operate the burner in this regime.

Electric vehicle water wading

The location of the battery in electric vehicles represents
a challenge in terms of water management and resistance to environmental
conditions. In the automotive industry, understanding these issues is key to
ensure the durability and optimum performance of electric vehicles.
Proper protection of electric vehicles from excessive
exposure to water is important to prevent damage, particularly to the battery.
Effective drainage management near the battery can avoid any potential
water-related risks. At the same time, various factors also have an impact on
the electric car, such as the vehicle's ride height or problems associated with
extreme weather and dirt.
CFD simulations enable the drainage and flow of water around
the lower battery panels to be visualized, as well as the identification of
sensitive areas where water could accumulate. It provides information about
areas of water concentration and it helps engineers decide how to make things
better, like adding extra protection. This ensures that electric car batteries
stay strong for a long time, even in challenging environments.

πŸ‘₯ Manekins consist of 57
individual regions with detailed models of skin heat, fat insulation etc etc.

🌞 solar radiation with an easy model.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦
17 regions on the bodies predict the fiala comfort indices "Percentage
People Dissatisfied"

Why is this relevant?

πŸ”₯ In internal combustion engines, you have a fantastillion tons of waste heat you can use to keep your passengers warm.

πŸ”‹ Heating, cooling etc. reaaally harms EV range - if done in the classical "i don't care for
efficiency" approach.

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 2310 now has the capability to simulate cohesive non-spherical particles. Recently, I tried out this new feature to
simulate a test that determines the material static angle of repose using the hollow cylinder method. In the simulation, I set the cohesion parameter to a very high value, and the resulting animation showed that instead of forming a conical shape pile by flowing out of a moving cylinder, the cohesive particles formed a cylindrical structure that eventually broke into two fragments.

Schlieren photography

Schlieren photography is an optical technique used to
visualize variations in the refractive index of air or other transparent
substances. In a schlieren photography system, a light source directs a beam
through a transparent medium. A curved mirror or lens focuses the light onto a
knife-edge, creating a shadow. Variations in the refractive index of the medium
deflect the light rays, producing bright and dark patterns. A camera captures
these patterns on a background, visualizing phenomena such as fluid flow and
heat distribution.
Schlieren photography
is widely used in scientific research and teaching to study phenomena such as
thermal convection, shock waves and air turbulence. In the video below, shock
waves can be observed for a supersonic flow over a cavity using schlieren
photography. This study can be applied, for example, to the supersonic
combustion in cavity-based scramjet.
Since schlieren
photography has provided over the years almost satisfied results, researchers
use data from this technique as a target, aiming to improve CFD software. Both
Schlieren and CFD data can be also used in combination in order to gain a
comprehensive understanding of fluid phenomena.
