I am hoping to put together some lunch and learn materials this year for anyone interested in CFD for water infrastructure applications. Does anyone have any favorite CFD topics you'd like us to present on? Don't be shy please comment in or message me your topics related to water modeling, chances are CFD has a role to play that I'd love to explore. For instance in this video, the topic would be modeling scour and mitigation through roughness elements behind outfalls... you get the idea, all topics related to dams & spillway hydraulics, bridge hydraulics, scour, storm water, wastewater, coastal protection... produced water and any others... all welcome!

⚡High Fidelity CFD Simulation of a Helicopter Rotor ⚡
Hybrid RANS-LES simulation using chimera method performed on the 7A helicopter rotor in high speed forward flight (mu = 0.4, Mtip = 0.6462).
Each blade mesh contains 5 million points and the background grid contains 4.1 billion points. 1536 CPU cores were used to run this simulation. A revolution is achieved in 24h. The video shows a Q criteria iso surface of value 5000 colored with vorticity magnitude.

VoF to Lagrangian modell for OpenFOAM
Dear friends, we have recently presented our work for a transformation model from #VoF to #Lagrangian approach for #atomisation, disintegration and #spray applications.
the video here shows the jet break-up from a swirl nozzle: red the liquid phase modelled with VoF, green the droplets as Lagrangian particles.

Did you know that minimum water splash in driver’s line of sight is a crucial aspect of vehicle safety ? CFD can accurately predict 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 and used to analyze splash angle and intensity, obtain droplet statistics for a soiling analysis, predict water loads and ingress, and much more.

Of course, this is just a preliminary simulation and there are still lots of room for improvement. The contact point, angle of impact, and few other parameters are crucial to the validity of any simulation and it is difficult determine these parameters from the video.
Other important parameters are related to the ball. While we know the diameter of the standard soccer ball, it has multiple layers of different materials which I approximate them as a single layer of rubber material (this was a huge assumption). If I have the footage of water-filled soccer ball impacting a rigid wall, then I could have done more to validate the ball model.
Few things which I could have done: scale the model so that the dimensions of the head is closer to Daniel's head, apply gravity on the human body. I've just realized this after I ran the simulations and compared the results side by side.

There
is so much cool work to do in combustion.
Check out
this “unwrapped”, or “unrolled”, rotating detonation engine (RDE).
Nitrogen-diluted hydrogen and air are injected through the inlet ports at the
bottom of the annular chamber, and the premixed fuel-air mixture enters the
combustion region through a row of nozzles. The engine is “started” via a
detonation channel attached to the left side of the unwrapped RDE. Once the
detonation wave is set, the solution is used to initialize the unwrapped RDE
with periodic boundaries (left and right ends). When the limit-cycle is
reached, a self-sustaining rotating detonation wave continues to propagate
within the RDE channel. Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) is used to capture the
detonation wave front, while maintaining a reasonable computational time.

What if the tube itself was a pump?
A simple question that led us on a research journey towards our most recent paper:
‘Fiber pumps for wearable fluidic systems’, published in this week’s issue of Science.
These pumps are thin, flexible and stretchable - in essence, tubing that generates its own pressure and flowrate silently, without moving parts. This allows high pressure fluidic circuits to be sewn directly into textiles and clothing, without the need for an external pump. In the future, these pumps could be used to power artificial muscles for soft supportive exosuits, for thermoregulatory clothing, and for wearable haptics. This work
was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

💦 Reversible Fluid Mixing💦
Ink is squirted into a fluid and mixed in until it disappears. By precisely
undoing the motions in the reverse direction, the ink becomes unmixed!
👉The demonstration seems to defy thermodynamics in that
it appears that entropy decreases, but in actuality the reversible mixing is made possible by ensuring that the mixing/unmixing is done without turbulence.

Attention all electronics engineers and designers!
Are you tired of dealing with overheating issues in your electronic systems? Look no
further than CFD! CFD is a powerful computational fluid dynamics (CFD) application specifically designed for electronics cooling. With its advanced simulation capabilities, CFD can
accurately predict temperature distributions and airflow patterns within your electronic systems, allowing you to optimize your designs and prevent overheating. Whether you're designing a new electronic product or trying to troubleshoot an existing system, CFD can provide you with valuable insights into the thermal behavior of your designs. With its user-friendly interface and robust modeling capabilities, you can quickly and easily create accurate simulations of your electronic
systems and analyze their performance under various operating conditions.

Designers want to reduce oil inside gearboxes to minimize
churning losses, while ensuring oil gets to critical locations. Use the Simcenter SPH Flow meshless method to easily model the high rotation and flow passing in-between the gears and accurately capture oil jets and splashes. Such an approach results in fewer physical tests, reduced cost, and faster time to market.
