On the same topic of energy dissipation looking back this one is actually already quite old (2016 maybe? guessing I ran this on 16 cores at the time), but this reminds me that with today's relatively easy access to powerful and much faster workstations, CFD has a lot to offer on this topic. This video shows two flow rates, you can see the low flow rate condition might be a bit under-resolved, but with a modern machine, today this could easily be run as a high accuracy model. The interaction with entrained air is of course super-interesting.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Heat vs. Wave Equation ๐ŸŒŠ

As the prototypical parabolic partial differential equation, the heat equation is among the most widely studied topics in pure mathematics. Its analysis is fundamental to the broader field of partial differential equations.

The wave equation is a second-order linear partial differential equation for describing wavesโ€”as they occur in classical physicsโ€”such as mechanical waves (e.g. water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves) or light waves.

Recent observations of biologically generated turbulence in the ocean have led to conflicting conclusions regarding the significance of the contribution of animal swimming to ocean mixing. Measurements indicate elevated turbulent dissipationโ€”comparable with levels caused by winds and tidesโ€”in the vicinity of large populations of planktonic animals swimming together

๐ŸŒ€ Fluidic Oscillator ๐ŸŒ€

A fluidic oscillator is a device with no moving parts that sprays a fluid from side to side. A nozzle funnels a fluid jet through a chamber with two feedback channels. When the jet sweeps close to one side of the chamber, part of the fluid is directed along the feedback channel and back toward the inlet. That flow feeds into a recirculating separation bubble in the middle of the chamber. As that bubble grows, it pushes the jet back toward the other feedback channel, continuing the cycle.

Francis Turbine CFD & FEA + FSI simulation. Standard Navier-Stokes equations. Visualization of particle-like flow to enhance the flow details. Imaginary particles enter the spiral approximately at the same time in two emissions. Nice to see how the runner swallows them gradually. Did you know that some particles stay in the turbine 5 times longer than the fastest ones?

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration achieved a successful prediction of jet noise as well as jet surface interaction noise.

Findings from these simulations have already resulted in new insights and additional experimental investigations of certain flow phenomena. Gaining confidence in the predictive capabilities of hybrid RANS/LES for jet noise is another step toward vehicle certification by analysis.

I am hoping to put together some lunch and learn materials this year for anyone interested in CFD for water infrastructure applications. Does anyone have any favorite CFD topics you'd like us to present on? Don't be shy please comment in or message me your topics related to water modeling, chances are CFD has a role to play that I'd love to explore. For instance in this video, the topic would be modeling scour and mitigation through roughness elements behind outfalls... you get the idea, all topics related to dams & spillway hydraulics, bridge hydraulics, scour, storm water, wastewater, coastal protection... produced water and any others... all welcome!

Of course, this is just a preliminary simulation and there are still lots of room for improvement. The contact point, angle of impact, and few other parameters are crucial to the validity of any simulation and it is difficult determine these parameters from the video.

Other important parameters are related to the ball. While we know the diameter of the standard soccer ball, it has multiple layers of different materials which I approximate them as a single layer of rubber material (this was a huge assumption). If I have the footage of water-filled soccer ball impacting a rigid wall, then I could have done more to validate the ball model.

Few things which I could have done: scale the model so that the dimensions of the head is closer to Daniel's head, apply gravity on the human body. I've just realized this after I ran the simulations and compared the results side by side.

There
is so much cool work to do in combustion.

Check out
this โ€œunwrappedโ€, or โ€œunrolledโ€, rotating detonation engine (RDE).
Nitrogen-diluted hydrogen and air are injected through the inlet ports at the
bottom of the annular chamber, and the premixed fuel-air mixture enters the
combustion region through a row of nozzles. The engine is โ€œstartedโ€ via a
detonation channel attached to the left side of the unwrapped RDE. Once the
detonation wave is set, the solution is used to initialize the unwrapped RDE
with periodic boundaries (left and right ends). When the limit-cycle is
reached, a self-sustaining rotating detonation wave continues to propagate
within the RDE channel. Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) is used to capture the
detonation wave front, while maintaining a reasonable computational time.

What if the tube itself was a pump?

A simple question that led us on a research journey towards our most recent paper:
โ€˜Fiber pumps for wearable fluidic systemsโ€™, published in this weekโ€™s issue of Science.

These pumps are thin, flexible and stretchable - in essence, tubing that generates its own pressure and flowrate silently, without moving parts. This allows high pressure fluidic circuits to be sewn directly into textiles and clothing, without the need for an external pump. In the future, these pumps could be used to power artificial muscles for soft supportive exosuits, for thermoregulatory clothing, and for wearable haptics. This work
was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
