In this simulation, the roughness elements are explicitly resolved from a meshing perspective, but there are other ways of doing this, using surface roughness or even porous media approaches in CFD. I am thinking of spending a bit of time investigating this more thoroughly, and was wondering if anyone out there has some use cases / or even case studies they might be able to share with me?

Electroadhesion endows robots with super-human abilities: mechanical geckoes that climb vertical walls and soft grippers that grasp the most delicate objects. Based on electrostatics, the adhesion forces are turned on and off by an electrical signal, promising extremely fast operation, from silent fully solid-state devices. Practical applications of electroadhesion have however been limited to date by two main challenges: (1) the adhesion forces can vary over 1000x by simply changing the angle between the electroadhesive tape and the object, (2) release is often slow due to residual adhesion when voltage is removed.

This simulation demonstrates the effect of rotation on a contained fluid, and the clear effect of centrifugal force acting on it. When an object undergoes rotation, the object feels there is a radially outward force, a centrifugal force from its reference frame. This principle is used in Liquid-mirror telescopes. The liquid and its container are rotated at a constant speed around a vertical axis, which causes the surface of the liquid to assume a paraboloidal shape.

Finite element analysis of UOE manufacturing process of offshore pipes
UOE is a method used for production of longitudinally welded large diameter pipes. The UOE forming consists of [1] crimping, [2] U-press, [3] O-press, and [4] Expansion. The numerical simulation presented here demonstrates the U-press and O-press stages where large residual stresses can be observed.
Initial geometric imperfections of the pipe, as well as residual stresses and material anisotropy of the steel material, induced by the line pipe manufacturing process, constitute major factors for the mechanical behavior of the steel pipe. In the last decade, significant effort has been devoted in modeling the UOE manufacturing process, to predict the material properties of the UOE manufactured pipe and estimate its mechanical strength under external pressure.

You wont catch me hanging out at a #soccer game, nor watching the #worldcup2022 unless some friends are having a gathering. Not really a big fan of FIFA either. But I do love me some #aerodynamics, #cfd, and #datavisualization.
Over the past ten years at my job, I've practiced lots of problems on things that were just fun and interesting to me. Airflow around a spinning soccer ball isnt exactly new science, but its still beautiful.
Before working in this field I routinely heard things like "well the air moves faster on one side than the other" but that didnt really mean much to me until later in my education. I think showing it directly changes a lot!

I got a new laptop and decided to see if it can handle the tasks I usually run on a workstation or computer cluster. It worked well. Using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) coupled with CFD in Simenter STAR-CCM+ 2210, I simulated the primary reverse flow cyclone feeding larger size catalyst particles back into a fluidized bed reactor.

we quantified the correlation of #flow-barrier height ratio in conjunction with #Froude #number #Fr with impact load, barrier deflection, and equivalent barrier stiffness based on coupled #CFD-#DEM #simulations of #debrisflow #impact on a #flexible #barrier. We recommend this height ratio be used as a design index in addition the prevailing #Froude #number based models. The student laboratory in the University of Southampton Towing Tank last week was to test a high-speed planing motor yacht hull form, with and without interceptors deployed at the transom. This is a 6 m/s run with no interceptors. It was good to be using the tank at higher speeds than in other recent student labs.
