🚨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The idea behind signing Henderson was more to lift standards in the dressing room. Chelsea needed experience and are surely better off now a 36-year-old starting for them in midfield is no longer a laughable notion.

🚨🔵 There were times in the Enzo Maresca era when some Chelsea fans felt a worrying lack of urgency to get to their match seats. They lingered at the bars and the food stands of the stadium concourse before kick-off and at half-time, glumly confident that their mechanical, heavily choreographed side would not make them regret it.

That trend has been consigned to history by Xabi Alonso. Get to your seat five minutes late and you’re liable to miss at least one Chelsea goal, and maybe more. 🔥

Jordan Henderson was brought in to provide experience, leadership and character to Chelsea’s dressing room, with Xabi Alonso keen to balance his squad with players at different stages of their careers.

His value was evident even before making his first appearance of the season against Brentford. England manager Thomas Tuchel had also recognised Henderson’s off-field qualities, taking him to the World Cup despite his limited prospects of playing.

Henderson was never expected to arrive in the final third and finish like prime Frank Lampard or curl in 25-yard free kicks like Gianfranco Zola. His role was to bring leadership and stability.

Caicedo’s importance to Chelsea has been underlined by every match he has missed due to injury. He is the least replaceable player in this squad, and Alonso has no chance of finding a workable, sustainable balance in this team without the Ecuadorean in it.

Joao Pedro is a proper No 9 now. He runs in behind, protects the ball with his back to goal, links play and attacks crosses with confidence and impeccable timing. Most importantly, when the ball finds him anywhere in the penalty area, you expect him to score.

🚨🔵 Chelsea's inexperience and lack of game intelligence have long let them down.

Henderson was there, constantly, to calm everyone down. There were a couple of times when Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, two enormously exciting attacking players, were looking to move the ball forward but Henderson was having none of it. For good reason, too.

Chelsea were cruising at the time, two goals to the good, and Bournemouth looked lost. There was an argument that the hosts should have looked to kill the game off with a third goal at Stamford Bridge, but such reward came with extreme risk. If they committed too many forward, the Cherries were there, ready for the counter-attack - and that was the only time they were ever likely to score at that point in the game.

Henderson was the calming voice to prevent the game becoming manic.

Sources describe Henderson as an immensely popular figure in the changing room even though he has only been there a matter of months.

“Before he shot I said which corner flag are we running to when you put it in the top corner and then we chose a corner flag, then he put it in the top corner and then we ran there, so it was funny man, it was a good goal, good day, good afternoon.”

🔵🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 One of Cole Palmer’s biggest issues over the past two seasons was how he was deployed, with Enzo Maresca receiving much of the criticism.

In Palmer’s first season at Chelsea, he played 44% of his Premier League minutes as a No.10, with much of the analysis suggesting his best performances came from the right. Over the following two seasons, 75% of his minutes came through the middle, compared to just 18% on the right, with occasional appearances on the left.

The bigger issue was the lack of fluidity in his positioning and movement, something Palmer himself highlighted when discussing his goal against Fulham on the opening weekend.

Under Xabi Alonso, Palmer has operated as a right-sided No.10 in Chelsea’s 3-4-2-1, giving him the freedom to drift wide or move centrally. With greater fluidity across the front line, he can operate in the areas where he is most effective.
