The Joy of Pressure? Maximizing Student’s Potential To Become Industry-Ready Graduates via Transformative Teaching
The recent trend seems to indicate that the graduates nowadays are so used to ‘spoon-feeding’, ‘PowerPoint slides based, ‘one-way street’, series of lectures done on a weekly basis to help them prepare for their final semester exams. This workshop explores the concept of transformative education and examines the use of the ‘pressure’ element to prepare students for the real world. At a time of declining resilience of millennial undergraduates, a competitive legal job market, and the ever high expectation of practice-ready law graduates, the workshop shall ultimately provide the participants with practical examples, sharing of experiences and basic concepts of transformative education via the element of ‘pressure’ in teaching and learning.

The Art of Journaling for Educators: Building Habits of Excellence

Teaching is an art that requires the practitioner to horn their craft through a concerted effort of knowledge acquisition and habit building. The current pandemic has helped identify various blind spots in the education practice which we as practitioners will have to overcome not just in the immediate present but also in the impending future. Through knowledge and skill acquisition we can master the current technologically driven climate of education. Yet beyond that, educators need to practice effective habits to ensure their craft is evolving with the needs of the time and learners. Habits that some of us have developed over the years have either helped or hampered our ability to seamlessly accommodate the demands of synchronous teaching. There are habits that educators can inculcate today towards ensuring excellence in their teaching. This course embeds an age-old habit of journaling towards being a mindful educator. Participants will learn both the art and science of journaling towards formulating a personalised journaling habit which they can begin to put into practice immediately.

Understanding Teaching and Learning Research in Enhancing Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL)

The multiple-track academic promotion was introduced in Malaysia and was explicitly discussed in the Malaysia Education Blueprint for Higher Education. Academics now have the option of being promoted based on the teaching track, However, it requires evidence of engagement in scholarly activities (research and publications) in teaching and learning (T&L). At its very core, scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) entails the integration of research within TnL to enhance and further develop practice. Educational research may involve various aspects of education including TnL methods, instructor training, and classroom dynamics. Educational research refers to the systematic collection and analysis of data related to the field of education, which may involve a variety of methods. This course provides an overview of a few research designs and their suitability of application specifically for TnL research.
