How to address "Gap year" in the interview?

1. Don't highlight the "Gap year" issue by yourself. Let the interviewer discover it and question you.

2. While it's essential to address the gap year, don't dwell on it for too long. Provide a concise and clear explanation, and then move on to discussing your qualifications and eagerness for the opportunity.

3. Be honest about the reason for your gap year. Emphasize any useful experiences that you might have gained during this time and how they make you a stronger candidate. Discuss any projects, volunteer work, or learning experiences you engaged in during the gap year to demonstrate that you used the time proactively.

4. If you used the gap year for personal development or to overcome challenges, talk about the skills you developed or the lessons you learned. This can show resilience and a commitment to self-improvement.

Tips for a Strong Resume:

1. Keep it concise (1 page)
2. Use a clean, professional font and maintain consistency in formatting
3. Utilize bullet points for easy readability
4. Quantify achievements where possible (use numbers and percentages)

Remember, your resume should be a snapshot of your professional journey, emphasizing your strengths and suitability for the position you're seeking.

Which newspapers should I read?

1) If you are yet to begin your reading habit and want to just start with increasing speed and vocabulary - Go for TOI, HT, MINT

2) If you are an existing reader already and want to increase your depth and breadth - Go for TH, IE and ET

Does the type of Work Experience matters in the B school process?

During admissions NO

During placement season YES. YES. YES

See when you fill your CAT form, they only consider the amount of experience. At that point BPO, Consulting or Accounting work experience all are same.

During interviews for admission is when they take deeper interest in your profile. A better type of work experience MIGHT fetch you couple of points more.

It is during the B school Summer and Final placements that the type of experience really matters. Which will decide the type of, or if, you get shortlists and final converts.

PS: This is excluding profile based shortlisted like S P Jain offers. Those are completely dependent on your type of work experience.

What’s the best time to fill the form to get a centre of my first preference?

There is no correlation to where you get your centre vis a vis when you fill the form. The slots and centres are randomly allocation figuring in your preferences.

Fill at your convenience. Just remember that if your centre is more than 100 km from your place of residence, plan to reach there a day before. Book a room. Relax. And be in the best state of mind before the exam.

What documents need to be uploaded?

The only documents you need to upload are:
A. Passport size photo

B. Signature

C. Category certificate, updated, with your category serial number mentioned as per Central List

D. At a later stage, there will be requirement for another authorization form in case if any candidate needs to carry medical implants like Metal/Pacemaker/ Lumbo Sacral Belt/Knee pad/Neck belt/Asthma pump/ Diabetes Pump/Medicated tinted glass etc. due to medical reason.

For CAT registrations, can I use my last year's user id and password?

NO. You cannot use any previous years' User ID and Password and must generate a new one.

You can, however, use the same Email ID and/or mobile number you used in the previous year.

How do I convert my CGPA to %age?

A. For CBSE, multiply your CGPA by 9.5

B. For GGSIPU, multiply your CGPA by 10

C. For Delhi University
For graduates before 2022, multiply grand CGPA by 9.5
For graduates after 2022, multiply grand CGPA by 10

D. For other colleges, compute the aggregate percentage of marks obtained as per the norms of the University/Board. If no norms exist, enter the aggregate percentage of marks obtained for all years/semesters of the degree course.

What work experience should I put in? Will internship be counted as a Work Experience? What if my work experience was along graduation?

Part-time/ Project/ Internship/ Articleship/ Pre-graduation work experience should not be entered and will not be counted as work experience.

Other than that, doesn’t matter what kind of work experience you have. As long as you have the supporting paperwork, for point allocation purpose, teaching in a school is same as working in an MNC

I am involved in the family business. Can I show it in CAT form? How do I do so?

Certainly, you can show it as work experience. That is, assuming, if your family business is a registered business. However, you need to:

A. Have an experience letter

B. Valid bank account statement and/or salary slips

C. Neither of the above two matters if you don’t have fundamental knowledge of the work that you are claiming to do. That will be the easiest way for me to assess whether you are telling the truth or not!

I have a career gap before/ after graduation. How can I hide it?

You can’t and you shouldn’t. the good thing is that you are aware of a gap.

What was the reason for the gap? Illness? Plans fell through? Trying something else but didn’t work out? Create a storyline to justify your gap.

Courses, internships etc can justify the gaps. All said and done, you need to work out an explanation by the time you reach your interview stage. Because, rest assured, it will be asked!

Where do I upload my CV points, certificates etc?

You don’t. There will be an appropriate time when the results are declared. At that time, the B schools will send a Performa for you to fill. Once you get a call from any specific B school, they will send a link to you where you would have to fill all such information like strength, weaknesses, role model etc

I don’t have an updated EWS / Category certificate.

Upload whatever version you have. Just remember to download undertaking format from CAT website and fill it. Make a combined pdf of your category certificate and this undertaking and UPLOAD THAT with your application.
