Beware of Counterfeit Brocade Licenses
Submit an inquiry to the License Verification Team!

Counterfeit licenses for Brocade products have been identified in the marketplace

Counterfeiting involves the unauthorized manufacture and/or distribution of another party’s goods, often using their trademarks and logos, without their consent, typically at a much lower price than the genuine product.

Counterfeiting of Brocade intellectual property (IP) occurs when the Brocade brand, logo, software or other IP is utilized without Broadcom/ Brocade’s consent. One form of IP counterfeiting is the issuance of Brocade software license keys by unauthorized parties. Counterfeit licenses are sold by unauthorized sales channels taking advantage of the strong Brocade brand, selling at a deep discount compared to authentic Brocade licenses. Please be aware that the use of counterfeit license keys results in devices not working and not capable of being supported, and voids all warranty and support obligations of Brocade. The use of devices with counterfeited license keys also carries significant risk of downtime and security breaches, interfering with the integrity of the network environment.

Adverse consequences of using counterfeit license keys

Counterfeit licenses can cause serious damage to your or your customer’s network environment. Even if counterfeiters are able to get counterfeit licenses to work on Brocade switches, you should be aware of the following:

- Use of counterfeit licenses constitutes an unauthorized modification of the device and will void all warranty and support.
- If Broadcom discovers the device you are seeking support on has a counterfeit license installed, Broadcom will discontinue all support and cancel all support and maintenance contracts applicable to that device. No refunds of prepaid support fees will be provided.
- Broadcom will also void any warranty applicable to a device with counterfeited software.
- Counterfeit licenses negate the ability to update FOS and apply maintenance and security fixes, the software may cease to function after firmware upgrades, and the counterfeit license may conflict with other legitimate Brocade licenses.

Below are warning signs of counterfeiting:

- Seller is asking for configuration details from the Brocade switch, such as the License ID or WWN, or the output of a set of FOS commands.
- Licenses are offered at a price point that is suspiciously lower than authentic Brocade products, or may be offering Brocade switches, with particularly attractive price points for configurations that include PODs and licenses.
- Seller operates a website that looks professional on the surface, but it is suspiciously lacking in details on their physical location (e.g. the only contact information is an email address or Skype ID, but no actual address or real phone number is provided).
- Seller is providing license key strings directly, rather than “transaction keys” that are used o generate a license key on the Broadcom Licensing Portal.

How to recognize legitimate Brocade licenses

Legitimate Brocade licenses are offered by Broadcom or Broadcom-authorized OEM and distribution partners. All legitimate Brocade licenses are offered in the form of certificates – either in the form of an “E-license” or a “paperpack.” Each certificate contains a unique “transaction key” that is used in conjunction with the Broadcom Licensing Portal to generate the actual license key for the switch.

Contact the Broadcom Counterfeit Support Line

If you see something in the market that looks questionable, or you have questions around licensing for Brocade products, please notify Broadcom by email at verify-brocade-license.pdl@broadcom.com. This email is a hotline for reporting suspicious licenses, products or activities or have any questions regarding the same.

Clarification of BSN End of Support (EOS) Policy

Brocade Storage Networking (BSN) Global Support has further clarified our End of Support (EOS) policy.

The BSN Technical Assistance Center (TAC) does not support or troubleshoot any device that is End of Support (EOS). For customers running a Multiple Device Fabric and TAC confirms that there is an EOS device in the fabric TAC will not troubleshoot the fabric until the device is removed from the Fabric. The connection to an EOS device is considered "a misapplication or improper maintenance" under Support Exclusions in the support terms and conditions.

"Support Exclusions. Brocade is not obligated to provide Support for Hardware that would otherwise be covered by a Support Plan if the Hardware has been damaged by misuse, accident, improper installation, misapplication, modification, unsuitable physical or operating environment, abnormal physical or electrical stress, improper maintenance (unless by Brocade), removal or alteration of switch or part identification labels, or failure caused by a product for which Brocade is not responsible.“

Storage Class Memory, what it is and why it matters

This is a really good article that is a great introduction to Storage Class Memory/Persistent Memory and the different memory technologies that can be candidates to be used for these use cases (of which Intel's Optane based on 3D XPoint is just one, albeit the most advanced and generally available at the moment). A highly recommended read.
