The current name honours Sir John Franklin, who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s Land. We are objecting to this change as yet another example of the erasure of Australia’s Anglo-Celtic heritage.
Importantly, we are also strongly opposed to naming a federal electorate after Tongerlongeter, who led attacks in which White settlers, including women and children, were murdered during the frontier conflict in Tasmania.
