The Old Dick Whittington (Also known as The Old Dick) #RIP ⚰️

Once situated at 24 #ClothFair, #Farringdon, #London, the original beerhouse opened in 1846 and was previously a 16th century timber framed house.

The Corporation of London acquired the building in 1916 so as to create a new thoroughfare from Long Lane to #Aldersgate

As a result it was subsequently demolished never to be seen again.

I have to say this really is a tragic loss that many of us wouldn't have seen without others who preserved such images before us.
We must do the same while we're here to do so.

#German prisoners would leave their camps and drink with British soldiers before being returned to their cells during #WW2. The war may have been a waste but the lessons we'll learn from it aren't.
Never again. 🍻

The site has housed pubs since the 1700s, with the current building being built in 1888.
It even had a cable car service up to #HighgateHill which ended outside the pub.

In 2014, the Archway Tavern was unfortunately closed due to a licensing dispute. For a brief time it re-opened as the Intrepid Fox, and then 'Dusk till Dawn'. The pub reopened again in 2021 as the Archway. 🖊 @VinnieSull1van

Night you cunning beastards, I know you're all in on it, listening from the floorboards!

But I know you're there, oh yes!
