No-Confidence Motion

Moved only in the Lok Sabha to test whether the Council of Ministers enjoys the confidence of the House. If passed, the Council of Ministers must resign.

Confidence Motion

Moved by the government to prove that it has the support of the majority in the Lok Sabha.

Adjournment Motion

Used to discuss a definite matter of urgent public importance by interrupting the normal business of the Lok Sabha.

Calling Attention Motion

Enables a member to draw the attention of a minister to a matter of urgent public importance and seek an official statement.

Privilege Motion

Moved when a member believes that the privileges of the House or its members have been breached.

Censure Motion

Moved against the government to express strong disapproval of its policies or actions. Unlike a No-Confidence Motion, it must specify the reasons for criticism.

Cut Motion

Moved during the discussion on Demands for Grants to reduce the amount of a demand. It is a parliamentary device to exercise financial control over the executive.

Motion of Thanks

Moved in each House after the President’s Address under Article 87. It provides an opportunity to discuss the government’s policies and programmes.
