🚨 Claude Will Add Invisible Marks to AI Content

Anthropic has signed the EU AI Act’s Article 50(2) transparency code and will start marking content generated by supported Claude models.

❓ How it works:

- Text: Claude will embed an invisible statistical watermark into its responses.
- Images/files: Supported .png, .jpg, and .svg files may receive signed C2PA provenance metadata.
- The marking may survive copy-paste and light editing.
- It will apply across Claude, Claude Code, Claude API, Cowork, Tag, and supported cloud platforms.
- Although this is linked to EU rules, Anthropic says marking will apply worldwide wherever Claude is available.

⚠️ Important limitation

A mark proves that content was processed by Claude, not necessarily that Claude originally created it. Human-written text can be marked after proofreading, translation, or summarisation.

No mark also doesn’t prove something was written by a human. Heavy editing, paraphrasing, translation, short text, or stripped file metadata can remove or weaken the signal.

Anthropic says public detection tools and technical documentation are still forthcoming.

Non-compliance with Article 50 transparency rules can lead to fines of up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher.
