New Android Malware Attacks Banking and Crypto Apps

With an Android sophisticated banking malware, hackers are attacking popular financial services worldwide, cybersecurity analysts warned in a new report.

Known as trojan Godfather, a new software attacks more than 400 banking and cryptocurrency apps spanning 16 countries, the Group-IB analysts said.

The cybersecurity specialists emphasised the decoy applications hosted on Google Play spread out Godfather.

According to the report, Godfather’s targets include:
49 US-based companies,
31 Turkish-based companies,
215 banks,
94 crypto wallet providers,
110 crypto exchange platforms serving users,
30 Spanish-based companies.

The analysts said that financial services providers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Kuwait, Italy, the U.K., and the U.S. were also among the most affected.

The malware attacks cryptocurrency-related apps and website accounts on the infected device by stealing logging and confirmation details and blocking the ability to delete the software.

The Google Protect app is helpless as Godfather in one of its functions perfectly imitates it, according to Dr. Jerry White of SincerelySecure cybersecurity firm that protects private assets funds. And instead of providing security info, it uses scanning time to conceal and achieve persistence of the malware on the infected device, he added.

I only recommend people make a browser shortcut for banking.
If users have Aegis authenticator ( Foss and compatible with google authenticator) for their crypto, at least those wallets should be safe.
Especially if wallets are from Aurora store. The sandboxed apps using goog framework and services may be more at risk than Aurora apps on the degoogled phones
