😁 Bitcoin’s recent rally wiped out around $3B in leveraged shorts, while major firms including Abraxas, Fasanara and Wintermute were spotted holding hundreds of millions in short perps on Hyperliquid.

⌛ But there’s an important detail: these positions appear to be part of cash-and-carry basis trades. The firms hold spot while shorting roughly equivalent perpetual exposure, staying largely market-neutral while collecting funding.

‼️ Cronos Halts Network After ~$75M Tectonic Exploit

💵 Cronos halted its chain on Sunday after lending protocol Tectonic suffered an exploit estimated at around $75M. The attack appears to have involved manipulating a thin-liquidity asset, pushing its price up roughly 100x in 20 minutes, then using the inflated value as collateral to borrow other assets.
😆 Around $6M was reportedly bridged to Ethereum before the network halt, while most of the funds remained on Cronos at the time of reporting.

⚠️ The incident raises another important DeFi question: when something goes wrong, users need more than an emergency stop. They need clear communication, a recovery plan, and visibility into what happens next.

😁 Better Mortgage’s new Coinbase-powered product lets borrowers use Bitcoin as collateral for a mortgage, but the lender may reuse that pledged BTC while keeping an equivalent amount available to return later. The Bitcoin can also remain tied to the mortgage for 15 or 30 years, unless the borrower refinances, sells, or pays off the primary mortgage.

🔈 CLARITY Act Stalls in the Senate

After months of negotiations and a revised 635-page proposal containing 126 Democrat-requested changes, the CLARITY Act failed to clear its key Senate procedural vote on Sept. 15. The motion received 49 votes in favor and 50 against, short of the 60 needed to advance.

The revised text had tightened ethics rules for federal officials and addressed issues around stablecoin rewards and protections for blockchain developers. With the bill stalled, attention now shifts toward the SEC and CFTC and how they may shape crypto rules without new legislation from Congress. Senate Banking Chair Tim Scott has explicitly called on the agencies to establish clearer rules while Congress continues its work. For crypto, regulatory clarity is still a work in progress.

🕯 Geopolitical tensions pushed WTI to $85.10 and Brent to $92.39, while Nasdaq futures slipped 0.5%. Bitcoin, meanwhile, stayed near $77,580 and barely moved despite the broader risk-off reaction.

⭐️It’s an interesting stress test for BTC. Oil jumped, equities wobbled, but Bitcoin held relatively steady. BTC is also up around 23% this month, compared with 9% for gold and 4% for Nasdaq.
