Siam Commercial Bank, in which the Thai King is the largest shareholder, has announced a majority takeover of Bitkub for $535MN - with the value of its coin surging 200% to $2.85.
Siam's own shares were also boosted to a six-week high off the back of the purchase, as demand for digital assets grows in Southeast Asia's 2nd largest economy.
Investors in the region have taken to crypto to offset diving fiat currencies and low interest rates on savings. Bitkub's CEO hailed the move as his startup becoming a part of critical infrastructure in Thailand.

The announcement was made by President Nayib Bukele while he was laying the foundation stone for the country’s first veterinary hospital – the country set to use $4mn profit from its Bitcoin Trust to build additional schools.
El Salvador set up Fidebitcoin after the country adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in September. The fund currently has $150m in reserves and is being managed by the Bank for the Development of El Salvador.
El Salvador’s decision to make Bitcoin legal tender has been controversial. However, Reuters reported in October that a growing number of locals have experimented with the digital currency, with a couple of million dollars remitted by migrants in other countries each day.
