Starfield animated shorts offer tantalizing glimpse at the game’s main planets

The sci-fi action role-playing game makes planetfall this Sept. Starfield, the latest “irresponsibly large” sci-fi action role-playing game from Bethesda Game Studios, is almost here. In the lead up to the game’s release this Sept., Bethesda has released a trio of short-form animated videos intended to introduce players to the Settled Systems, the small pocket of colonized star systems in which the game takes place.
Told solely through visuals and music with zero dialogue, “Starfield: The Settled Systems” is more an anthology of mood pieces than an explicit lore dump. Rather than overwhelm fans with info, it offers a glimpse at the possibilities and stories within the upcoming game’s universe.
“Supra Et Ultra” (Latin for “Above and Beyond”) follows the story of a courier who signs up for a career of excitement and adventure as a military pilot on New Atlantis, the capital planet of the United Colonies. “The Hand That Feeds” follows your standard pair of scoundrel street-thieves who run afoul of Ryujin Industries, a megacorporation based on the city of Neon on the planet Volii Alpha, while “Where Hope is Built” centers on a young orphan who dreams of escaping the planet of Akila for a life among the stars.
It’s not known whether any of these characters will cross paths with players during their own adventures in Starfield, but what is certain is that they’re absolutely gorgeous to look at. It’s unclear which animation studio (or studios) produced these shorts, but they certainly bear a striking resemblance to the work of Titmouse, the American animation studio known for such shows as Metalocalypse and The Venture Bros. One can only hope that these won’t be the last animated glimpses at Starfield’s universe ahead of the game’s release.
Starfield launches Sept. 6 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X, and it will be a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass.

Strange Planet premieres Aug. 9 Even if you aren’t already a fan of Strange Planet, Nathan Pyle’s charmingly subversive webcomic where blobby blue aliens circumlocute around common human objects and experiences, you may still recognize them when you see them. Pyle’s strips — typically four panels of low-key observational humor, rendered in soft pinks and blues — are all over social media and the internet, with multiple book collections and plenty of associated merchandise. Because each strip stands alone, they’ve attained a viral pass-around state, where they’re constantly being rediscovered and reposted in every possible forum. Now, Pyle has teamed up with Community creator / Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon to turn the strip into an animated TV series, and the first trailer has arrived.
Strange Planet the strip doesn’t really have running characters, as far as anyone but Pyle knows — the blue aliens almost all look alike, and they all talk alike, with a kind of gentle, self-effacing, philosophical acceptance about the oddities of things like coffee (“jitter liquid,” alcohol (“mild poison”), and fast food. The animated series, to judge from the early episodes provided for critics, is similarly an anthology show, with episodes moving between different sets of characters in different professions and at different points in their lives.
The show preserves Pyle’s art style and humor, to the point where a lot of the language will be familiar to fans of his strips — but it’s unquestionably a Dan Harmon series as well, with Harmon’s signature humanistic take on failure and regret, family connections and philosophy, learning and growing. The story arcs could be Rick and Morty arcs, except without the gross-out humor, frantic tone, and overall air of aggressive cynicism. In the same way, they’re about characters facing and overcoming anxieties and dealing with their own shortcomings. Just as the Strange Planet strip offers a twisted mirror of our world, the series offers a twisted mirror of Rick and Morty — a version of that animated series made for a much calmer, quieter audience.
The series features voices by Tunde Adebimpe, Demi Adejuyigbe, Lori Tan Chinn, Community’s Danny Pudi, and Hannah Einbinder.

As the Fires of Rubicon heat up, FromSoftware has released an in-depth look at Armored Core VI’s gameplay. The roughly 13-minute presentation covered everything from armored core movement capabilities and customization options to the kinds of enemies you’ll face as the mercenary 621.

From the story trailer that was released last week, we know that, in AC6, you’ll take up the mantle of 621, a bioengineered human whose only purpose is to pilot mechs under the guidance of your handler, Walter. We also know that you’ll be fighting for control of the mysterious but volatile resource coral, native to only one planet in the galaxy: Rubicon.
In Armored Core VI, your mechs are heavy, but they can move. It’s really fascinating to see how FromSoftware designed these mechs to convey the heft associated with a million-ton walking metal war machine that can also flip and flit about the battlefield as though its insides are nothing but hollow bird bones. From the trailer, you’ll use those maneuvering capabilities to traverse “huge, multi-layered stages” that encompass all sorts of environments, from gargantuan industrial plants to sandstorm-swept deserts and frozen mountain ranges.
Each core has four weapons, one for each arm and shoulder, and the garage will allow you to customize each part to suit your play style. There are projectile weapons, energy swords, missile launchers, shields, and more. You can also modify your head unit and your chest, or “core,” unit to give your mech the look you want.
In combat, Armored Core VI doesn’t look like it’ll rely too much on the precise dodging and attacking mechanics of its Soulsborne siblings. But it also doesn’t seem like you’ll be able to just spam missiles either. Each enemy will be vulnerable to a specific kind of damage, and using that damage enough will stagger your enemy, briefly incapacitating them and making them susceptible to an all-out attack.
In one neat bit from the trailer, 621 has to take down a massive mobile platform, dismantling it piece by piece. The trailer didn’t spoil too much of the fight, but the sheer size and scale of the battle reminds me of that huge mecha boss fight at the beginning of Nier: Automata.
Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is less than a month away, releasing on August 23rd on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam.

Starfield will be released in just over a month, and on Tuesday, developer Bethesda Game Studios released three animated shorts as part of a new anthology series called Starfield: The Settled Systems.
In the shorts, you’ll get a glimpse of three of the game’s big cities. “Follow a delivery pilot in New Atlantis seeking the exciting life of the elite; a stranded orphan looking for a way out of Akila City; and two street rats struggling to survive in the underbelly of Neon,” the studio wrote in a press email.
If you’re at all excited for the game, I’d recommend taking the time to watch each of the shorts. They’re all less than three minutes, gorgeous in motion, and offer an intriguing taste of the Starfield universe. 重温巅峰之作：《轩辕剑叁：云和山的彼端》Steam版简评
