In a time when video game consoles are becoming more powerful and more connected than ever and AAA games are massive, bloated endeavors, Untitled Goose Game publisher Panic decided to go back to basics with the now $199 Playdate: a minuscule yellow handheld about the size of a Post-it note with a non-backlit black-and-white screen and a fishing pole-style crank on one side in addition to a D-pad and three face buttons.
Its design looks like it could’ve easily fit into Nintendo’s or Sega’s hardware stable in the early aughts, with games that similarly reflect some of the most fun, experimental games of the day.
That’s fitting: early developers for the system are responsible for some of the most unique and indelible gaming experiences from that time, like Katamari Damacy and the ever-maddening QWOP. Its games are delivered in seasons (the first one’s free), but users can also sideload community-made games if they want to.

Some more spider people are swinging into Fortnite today. As expected, Epic announced today that both Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2099 will be added to the in-game item shop ahead of next week’s premiere of Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).
Here’s what the characters look like in the battle royale:
The two skins join a surprisingly large number of spider people in the game, which started way back in 2021 when the original Spider-Man debuted as part of Chapter 3. (Miles’ co-star Gwen joined the roster last year.) The update is more than just some new characters, though: it will also include the return of the web shooter items, which let any character swing around the island as if they were Spider-Man. There are also some new quests, which will unlock a song from the upcoming movie as lobby music. Sadly, it doesn’t look like Spider-Ham is coming to the game. Check out the full details here.

Spider-Mans Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara (aka Spider-Man 2099) have joined the Fortnite roster, ushering in the return of Web-Shooters to the battle royale.
Spider-Man’s Web-Shooters get a new look and a new name: They are now called the Spider-Verse Web-Shooters, but they’ll let you web-sling through Fortnite just like the original ones.
Here’s a look at the new Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2099 cosmetics, and some representation from Spider-Ham (his cartoonish mallet):

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse arrives to theaters on June 2. Shameik Moore (Dope), Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye), and Jake Johnson (New Girl) reprise their roles as Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Peter B. Parker, respectively.
The cast will introduce multiple characters new to the franchise, including the aforementioned Spider-Man 2099 played by Oscar Isaac (Dune Part One), Spider-Woman, played by Issa Rae (Insecure), and the dimension-hopping supervillain the Spot, played by Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore). A second sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release on March 29, 2024. Expect even more details on the Fortnite crossover when Epic Games makes their big announcement on Tuesday.

It’s the only third-party controller that works with PS Remote Play There’s a new, Sony-licensed mobile controller in town. Backbone’s DualSense-inspired One, which originally launched in 2022 for iOS, now has an Android counterpart with USB-C support instead of Lightning. This PlayStation edition is a palette swap from the all-black version that’s selling for the same $99.99 price, adopting the DualSense’s black and white color scheme, as well as its translucent face buttons.
In case you haven’t heard of the Backbone One, it’s the best controller made for a phone that I’ve used. It plugs into your phone’s charging port, using less battery over time compared to Bluetooth wireless, and it offers a passthrough charging port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Backbone claims that most Android phones should be able to fit in this controller.
Notably, the Backbone One is now the only third-party Android controller that works with PS Remote Play (just as it is on iOS), the app that lets you connect to your PlayStation 4 or 5 console and play it over Wi-Fi or cellular. With the latest update to the PlayStation app, gamers can launch right into it by double tapping the Backbone One’s options button.
$99.99 is a lot for a controller, but I haven’t found any other option that so convincingly turns your phone into a console, of sorts (although, Razer has come the closest). When you plug in your phone, you’ll be greeted with a well-designed dashboard that encourages game discovery, interacting with friends, and sharing clips and screenshots on social media. It’s a nifty gadget, and PlayStation fans who have an Android phone might have a hard time resisting it.

Total War: Pharaoh is out this October The new Total War game takes players to the deserts of ancient Egypt. Titled Total War: Pharaoh, the latest game in the strategy franchise takes place during the Egyptian New Kingdom, right around the Bronze-Age collapse. The players take the role of a prospective pharaoh, who will determine the fate of not just Egypt, but also the people of Canaan and the Hittite empire.
There will be eight leaders available, each with different play styles, though only Ramses is revealed on the official website.
“There are few periods more iconic than Ancient Egypt; fraught with political intrigue, cataclysmic events and grand war campaigns, it’s the perfect setting for a Total War title,” said Game Director, Todor Nikolov in a press release.
The announcement trailer focuses on a riveting battle ... of a dung beetle pushing a mound of poop across the desert landscape. That is until that prized sphere of doodoo is pierced by an arrow and the beetle goes flying, only to be picked up by a fearless military leader, who then gazes out on a battlefield.
