ZCASH WASN’T ALWAYS CALLED ZCASH

The story of Zcash started years before the first $ZEC block was mined.

It began with Zerocoin.

🔹 2013 — ZER0COIN

Researchers introduced Zerocoin as a proposed privacy extension for Bitcoin.

The idea was groundbreaking: use zero-knowledge proofs to break the visible link between where coins came from and where they were spent.

But Zerocoin had limitations. It wasn't yet a complete private payment system.

🔹 2014 — ZEROCASH

The research evolved.

A team of cryptographers published “Zerocash: Decentralized Anonymous Payments from Bitcoin.”

Instead of simply obscuring transaction history, Zerocash introduced a much more ambitious design using zk-SNARKs.

The system could hide:

• the origin of a payment
• its destination
• the amount transferred

This was a major step toward a truly privacy-preserving cryptocurrency.

🔹 2016 — ZCASH

The research eventually became a real, independent blockchain.

Zcash officially launched in October 2016.

What started as an attempt to add stronger privacy to Bitcoin had evolved into an entirely separate monetary network built around zero-knowledge cryptography.

ZER0COIN → ZEROCASH → ZCASH

More than a decade of cryptographic research stands behind the privacy technology Zcash uses today.
