Zcash could soon gain a major new decentralized trading route.

With THORChain v3.20, the protocol updated its Zcash integration for compatibility with NU6.3 “Ironwood” — bringing ZEC another step closer to native cross-chain swaps.

THORChain says Zcash is expected to be the next chain integration.

Why could this matter for ZEC?

🔄 Native cross-chain swaps
ZEC could potentially be exchanged directly with assets on other supported networks through THORChain.

🚫 No wrapped ZEC required
Native integration could allow users to swap native ZEC without relying on a tokenized representation on another blockchain.

🔐 Less reliance on centralized exchanges
Users could gain another route for exchanging ZEC without depositing funds with a traditional centralized exchange.

🌐 Greater interoperability
Native THORChain support could connect Zcash more directly with the broader cross-chain crypto ecosystem.

⚠️ Important: Some reports claim ZEC swaps are already live. However, THORChain's official v3.20 announcement describes Zcash as “one step closer to launch.”

For that reason, we currently consider the integration upcoming — not yet confirmed live.

If completed, this could become an important new liquidity and accessibility channel for ZEC.

🇪🇺 ZCASH ETF IS LIVE — BUT EU INVESTORS FACE A BARRIER

Grayscale’s Zcash ETF (NYSE Arca: ZCSH) is now trading in the United States, opening a regulated exchange-traded route to ZEC exposure.

But many EU retail investors cannot simply buy ZCSH through their brokers.

WHY?
Under the EU’s PRIIPs framework, investment products offered to retail investors generally require a Key Information Document (KID).

The U.S.-listed ZCSH currently does not provide the required EU documentation, creating a regulatory barrier for many European retail brokers.

So what can EU investors do?

• BUY ZEC DIRECTLY
Investors can still purchase ZEC through platforms that support it in their jurisdiction and move it to self-custody.

• USE EU-ACCESSIBLE INVESTMENT PRODUCTS
Where available, investors can use Zcash-linked products that meet European regulatory and documentation requirements.

• PROFESSIONAL INVESTOR ACCESS
Professional clients may have access to products unavailable to retail investors, depending on their classification and broker.

⚠️ IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

The current ZCSH restriction is NOT a ban on owning Zcash in the EU.

It is primarily a regulatory restriction on retail access to a U.S.-listed investment product.

However, another regulatory development is approaching: from July 2027, new EU anti-money-laundering rules will impose additional restrictions on regulated financial and crypto service providers dealing with anonymity-enhancing coins.

That is a separate issue from today’s ZCSH/PRIIPs barrier — and could have much broader implications for privacy coins in Europe.

ZCASH WASN’T ALWAYS CALLED ZCASH

The story of Zcash started years before the first $ZEC block was mined.

It began with Zerocoin.

🔹 2013 — ZER0COIN

Researchers introduced Zerocoin as a proposed privacy extension for Bitcoin.

The idea was groundbreaking: use zero-knowledge proofs to break the visible link between where coins came from and where they were spent.

But Zerocoin had limitations. It wasn't yet a complete private payment system.

🔹 2014 — ZEROCASH

The research evolved.

A team of cryptographers published “Zerocash: Decentralized Anonymous Payments from Bitcoin.”

Instead of simply obscuring transaction history, Zerocash introduced a much more ambitious design using zk-SNARKs.

The system could hide:

• the origin of a payment
• its destination
• the amount transferred

This was a major step toward a truly privacy-preserving cryptocurrency.

🔹 2016 — ZCASH

The research eventually became a real, independent blockchain.

Zcash officially launched in October 2016.

What started as an attempt to add stronger privacy to Bitcoin had evolved into an entirely separate monetary network built around zero-knowledge cryptography.
