Hal Finney was a developer for the PGP Corporation and a cypherpunk who ran a cryptography remailer. In addition, Hal also created RPOW, the first Proof-of-Work system before Bitcoin. When Satoshi announced Bitcoin on the cypherpunks mailing list, Hal was one of the first people to run Bitcoin.

As of today, many people believe Hal Finney was Satoshi Nakamoto, and that he sent a transaction to himself to add some validation to the infant network. Among the facts sustaining this conspiracy is their similar writing style, their background in cryptography
