Athenian democracy 2,500 years ago allowed free men, not women and not slaves, the right to vote. Over two thousand years later, the American revolution resulted in free men, not women and not slaves, gaining the right to vote. Major revolutions, including in Iran and those of the Arab Spring, typically replace one dictator with another, rather than move societies toward actualized democracy. Why is political change toward democracy so difficult to achieve? This discussion focuses on what I call political plasticity, the ability to change (or not change) social relations when structures change. I examine the psychological foundations of political plasticity, both inside and outside individuals. The point of departure for this discussion is four recent books: The Psychology of Dictatorship (2013), The Psychology of Democracy (2016), The Psychology of Radical Social Change: From Rage to Revolution (2018), and Threat to Democracy: The Appeal of Authoritarianism in an Age of Uncertainty (2019).

This presentation explores the role of women in the Green Uprising in Iran in 2009 and how their widespread involvement brought to the fore some of the contradictions in the Islamic Republic of Iran. From the speeches of the main opposition candidate’s wife, Dr. Zahra Rahnavard, and the “poster girl” of the uprising, Neda Agha Soltan, to the never-ending debate over the mandated veiling of women, their presence and leadership during the uprising highlights the limits of their state-sponsored empowerment, and their struggle for more.

pouya-alimaghamPouya Alimagham is a historian of the modern Middle East at MIT. His dissertation, titled: “Contesting the Iranian Revolution: The Green Uprising,” was the 2016 winner of the Association for Iranian Studies’ Mehrdad Mashayekhi Dissertation Award, which is presented biannually. The manuscript was published in expanded form with Cambridge University Press in 2020. His other articles and book chapters cover the Arab Spring, Iranian protest music, women in Middle East revolutions, sectarianism, and the psycho-history of post-9/11 discourse. He teaches courses on the modern Middle East, the early Islamic period, and in the fall of 2018, he instituted and taught for the first time, “Modern Iran: A Century of Revolution.” In the spring of 2019, MIT’s School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) awarded him the Levitan Teaching Award—an award that was the result of a student-initiated process.

What Path is China Carving for its Future and Where Does Iran Fit in that Picture?

Since the release of the Iran-China strategic blueprint in June 2020, a document that was later signed in Tehran in March 2021, the question of “where is the Iran-China relationship headed?” has gained much traction. In this talk we would like to focus on the China side of this question and better understand what China is after in Iran, as like all big powers China does not divulge its intent explicitly and this has to be inferred from its actions.

Admittedly this is only half of the question in terms of what the future holds for this relationship, the other half of how Iran may engage with it is dependent on a number of factors including the Iran-US relationship and how it shall evolve. This aspect requires a separate elaboration and won’t be dealt with in this talk.

We will focus on China’s ambitions and what motivates it, namely — what compels China to expand globally, why Eurasia is central to China’s vision of its future, why the Mediterranean basin is critical to this vision, and why Iran is a critical plank for gaining a foothold in this basin.

Younes Jalali has lived in China, Japan and Vietnam and was formerly Assistant Prof. at Stanford Univ.

The Great Terror in the Soviet Union began in early 1930s. It not only affected hundreds of thousands of Soviet citizens, but also tens of thousands of foreign political activists as well as non-political migrants sheltering and working on Soviet soil.
By exploiting the memoirs of labour camp survivors as well as newly released materials from former Soviet archives, especially the minutes of prisoner interrogations and transcripts of their trials, this study aims to present a detailed picture of the life and times of the Iranian community in the Soviet Union during the 1930s and 1940s.
