🇦🇷❌🇬🇧 Argentina sends secretary to Brazil to discuss support for British military presence in the Malvinas (Falklands)

On Wednesday (17), on a visit to Brazil, the Secretary of Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic of Argentina, Guillermo Carmona, told O Globo newspaper that he came to the country in order to strengthen ties of military cooperation with Brasilia in view of the large British military presence in the Falkland Islands.

"The Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic are a strategic tripod for Argentina. We have a very important cooperation with Brazil, but we want to move to a level of greater scope and importance," he said.

In addition to Brasilia, Buenos Aires is also seeking Uruguay's support and intends to reactivate the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone (Zopacas) with African countries, a Brazilian initiative approved by the UN General Assembly in 1986.
There will be a meeting of ministers from the countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean in November of this year.

"With Brazil, Uruguay and Africa, we share a zone of peace and cooperation recognised by the UN. We want to reactivate Zopacas and this proposal is well received by the African countries," said the secretary of state, noting that of the little more than 3,000 permanent residents of the Malvinas, 1,500 are military personnel.

Reserve General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz has been chosen by the United Nations to lead a fact-finding mission in Ukraine.

The announcement of Santos Cruz's name was made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during a conversation with journalists alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the city of Lviv on Thursday.

From Brasilia, Santos Cruz told UN News that he felt very honoured to have his name considered by Guterres.

"I have now learned that the UN Secretary-General has considered my name to fulfil a task in Ukraine. I am very honoured and I am sure that the comrades who will also be selected by the United Nations are people of the highest quality, and this is a great guarantee for our work, so that we can have a positive result on the issue that is going to be dealt with."
