🇲🇽 Navy chief: Mexico to become “world shipping power”

Navy Minister José Rafael Ojeda Durán suggests Mexico will become a “world shipping power” thanks to the construction of a trade corridor between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

On Mexico’s National Navy Day, Ojeda noted that the government is building a “new route for global trade” between Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, on the Pacific side and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, on the Gulf coast.

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor will have a modernized railroad and upgraded highways between the port cities of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos as well as 10 new industrial parks.

The government is touting the corridor as an alternative to the Panama Canal given that it will connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans across a relatively narrow strip of land.

At dawn today, Saturday, corresponding to 3/6/2023, one of the security forces assigned to secure the international border line chased drug smuggling agents.. During the chase, the security personnel breached the insurance barrier and exchanged fire, which led to the death of (3) members of the Israeli security forces, the injury of (2) others, in addition to the death of the Egyptian security personnel during the exchange of fire.. All search, inspection, and insurance measures are being taken for the area, as well as taking legal measures regarding the incident.

Sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and our wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.

The rifles seem to be Albanian ASh-78 Tip-1 and Type 3 AK-47 pattern rifles.

⚖️🇺🇦 The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) condemned Ukraine to pay 40k EUR in damages for refusing to register the marriage of a same-sex couple.

The verdict, in a case brought to the court by plaintiffs Andrii Maimulakhin and Andrii Markiv in 2014, adds to calls for increased protection for and recognition of LGBTQ rights in the country, whose constitution still describes marriage as between a man and a woman.

The couple's "sexual orientation had been the sole basis for the difference in treatment," the ECHR said.

"(Ukraine's) broadly worded aim of the protection of the traditional family could not in itself be accepted as a valid ground for justifying the denial" of equal rights, it added.

Legalisation is still opposed by conservative parts of Ukrainian society and the church, though President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is currently considering a petition and he could request that parliament draft a law.

Last year, Zelenskiy responded positively to a related petition but said it was not possible to alter the constitution, during wartime.

🇨🇳 China objects to NATO labelling it a threat

China "strongly opposes" NATO repeatedly labelling it a threat, China's embassy to Norway said on Saturday, referring to remarks by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a recent visit to the Scandinavian country.

Stoltenberg had accused China of threatening neighboring countries and suppressing countries that do not comply with it.

"NATO claims to be a regional and defensive organization, but certain members of NATO constantly extend beyond traditional defense regions, frequently establishing close military contacts with countries in the Asia-Pacific, which results in escalating tensions," embassy said.
