🇺🇾Uruguay’s historic drought leaves water supply running dangerously low

A historic drought in Uruguay has left the reservoirs that provide water for the country’s capital Montevideo almost dry.

Low rainfall and high temperatures across the southern region of South America have triggered a severe drought over the last year, affecting crops in neighboring grains producer Argentina and triggering steep farm losses.

In Uruguay, the water deficit is the worst in 74 years, according to officials. It is affecting supply to thousands of households and leading to poor water quality.

Patches of dirt can be seen surrounding some spots of water in Canelon Grande Reservoir.

The latest data shows the Paso Severino reservoir, which serves more than half of Uruguay’s 3.5 million people, has around 6.2 million cubic meters of water, a far cry from the 60 million monthly average. Around 650,000 cubic meters is needed every day to supply the capital.

The Uruguayan trade union movement called on the public to protest, fearing "the seriousness of the water crisis."

The Argentina market understands that the only possible relief for the pressure in the exchange market is the entry of fresh dollars.

But the Government strives to maintain the mystery. The most viable mechanism appears to be a widening of the China swap.
The swap does not directly contribute dollars to the troubled foreign exchange market, but it helps to close the foreign trade gap, supplying importers or debtors who can make their payments abroad with yuan.

“Perhaps it is not very clear what the Government can do to lower inflation that has already gotten out of control. But it is very clear what you should not do: encourage consumption even more,” warned Adriana Dupita, Bloomberg Intelligence economist for Brazil and Argentina. “It is worrying that the Government decides to do it before the elections and with the risks of hyperinflation increasing. The costs of this strategy will not be long in coming.”

🇦🇷❌💸 — Starting today, Argentina will prevent investors from using dollars resulting from operations with sovereign debt securities to buy other dollarized assets for 15 days.

RG 962 is an attempt to contain the volatility of the dollar and prevent speculative financial maneuvers, in which some operators bought government bonds traded in US currency and sent them to foreign agents, profiting from the difference in prices on the re-entry and sale of Argentine sovereign bonds, due to currency fluctuations.

Pursuant to the resolution, investors may carry out operations with settlement in foreign currency or transfer negotiable securities to or from foreign depository agents, only if the client has not carried out operations for the sale of fixed income securities issued by Argentina in the previous fifteen calendar days.
