๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌโŒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡พ โ€” ๐Ÿ“ฐ WSJ: Libyan Militia Leader and Egyptโ€™s Military Back Opposite Sides in Sudan Conflict

โ€” "A powerful Libyan militia leader and the Egyptian military have sent military support to rival generals battling for control of neighboring Sudan, people familiar with the matter say, an illustration of how the fighting threatens to draw in regional powers.

Khalifa Haftar, the commander of a faction that controls eastern Libya, dispatched at least one plane to fly military supplies to Sudanโ€™s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, these people said. Meanwhile, Egypt sent warplanes and pilots to back the Sudanese military, they added.

The involvement of outside forces raises the risk of a dangerous escalation in the fighting that could widen the conflict and undermine efforts by the U.S., the United Nations and others to mediate a cease-fire."

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น Ethiopia protests against militia disbandment continue

Protests have continued in several places in Ethiopiaโ€™s Amhara region for a sixth consecutive day.

Demonstrators clashed with security forces and three cities have imposed night-time curfews. Despite such restrictions - including a ban on public gatherings - protests are showing no sign of subsiding.

Rallies have been held in multiple towns with clashes reported in Debre Birhan, 130km north of the capital Addis Ababa and one of the cities where curfews have been announced.

The advocacy group the Amhara Association of America has accused government troops of firing at and killing civilians on Monday and Tuesday.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น Civilian killings reported in Ethiopia's Amhara unrest

At least two civilians who had sheltered in a displacement camp have been killed during clashes in the Ethiopian city of Debre Birhan as protests intensify in the countryโ€™s Amhara region.

Residents have told that Tuesdayโ€™s clashes between federal security forces and local militias in Debre Birhan, 130km north of the capital, Addis Ababa, lasted for hours.

According to one resident, the two individuals killed had been sheltering in a camp in the city after fleeing ethnic-based violence in the western Oromia region. Another resident said protesters raided a police building in the city, vowing to free people detained in connection with a massive anti-government rally on Sunday.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น Businesses reopen after Ethiopian militia protests

Businesses have been reopening in towns and cities across Ethiopia's Amhara region following six days of violent protests over plans to reorganise the armed forces.

At least five people have died in the demonstrations.

People took to the streets after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said he intended to integrate the country's regional forces into one national army in order to improve security and unity.

Some in Amhara fear that without its own special forces the region would be more vulnerable to attacks.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น Egypt accuses Ethiopia of "buying time" in Nile dam row

Egyptโ€™s deputy foreign minister on African affairs has accused Ethiopia of โ€œbuying timeโ€ through negotiations while continuing to fill its disputed Nile dam without an agreement.

In a statement on Wednesday, the minister condemned statements by Ethiopia that had accused Cairo of โ€œpoliticisingโ€ the Nile dam dispute.

Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt have been embroiled in a years-long dispute over the dam, which Sudan and Egypt fear would reduce their shares of water from the River Nile.
