๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ•Š๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ โ€” ๐Ÿ“ฐ CNN (March 20, 2023): Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou to make historic visit to mainland China

โ€” "Taiwanโ€™s former President Ma Ying-jeou will visit mainland China next week, the first such trip by a former Taiwanese leader since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

Ma, a senior member of Taiwanโ€™s Kuomintang (KMT) opposition party, will be in mainland China between March 27 and April 7, his foundation said in a statement Sunday.

He will pay respects to his ancestors in southwestern Hunan province and lead a delegation of Taiwanese students to interact with counterparts from mainland China in a number of cities, according to the foundation.

While the trip is ostensibly a private one it is filled with historic symbolism and comes at a time of deepening tensions over the future of Taiwan."

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ•Š๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ โ€” ๐Ÿ“ฐ FT (March 19, 2023): Former Taiwan president to pay historic visit to China
โ€” "Taiwanโ€™s former president Ma Ying-jeou will visit China this month in what will be the first ever visit to the Communist country by a sitting or retired Taiwanese president.

The 10-day trip, starting on March 27, will highlight the stark differences between Taiwanโ€™s two main political parties over its relations with China, just as they gear up to campaign for next Januaryโ€™s presidential and parliamentary elections.

Maโ€™s China visit will take place at roughly the same time as Taiwanโ€™s president Tsai Ing-wen is scheduled to travel to the US, the only guarantor of Taiwanโ€™s security."

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ•Š๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ โ€” ๐Ÿ“ฐ The Guardian: Former Taiwan president to visit China in unprecedented trip

โ€” "Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwanโ€™s former president, will visit China this month in the first visit by a current or former leader since the defeated Nationalist Chinese government fled to the island at the end of the civil war in 1949.

The high profile visit has been presented by Ma and his party, the opposition Kuomintang (KMT), as a chance to boost friendly cross-strait exchanges at a time of extreme disconnection, which has been driven by Beijingโ€™s plans to annex Taiwan and exacerbated by the pandemic.

However it is also likely to fuel domestic political division between the KMT and ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) over relations with China"

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ•Š๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ โ€” ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ฐ SCMP | Former Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou says massacre history holds lessons for both sides of strait
โ€” "On a visit to mainland China, former Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou visited the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanking Massacre on March 29, 2023. Ma said both Beijing and Taipei could draw lessons from Japanโ€™s massacre of Chinese people in 1937 in the city now known as Nanjing.

Ma also said people on both sides of the strait should โ€œstay self-reliantโ€ and he warned against all invasions as he urged Beijing and Taipei to find ways to avoid war and instead seek peace.

Maโ€™s remarks came on the third day of his historic yet controversial 12-day visit to the mainland, the first such trip in more than seven decades by a former Taiwanese leader."

On Tuesday, the second day of his historic trip to the mainland, Ma paid tribute to Sun at his mausoleum in Nanjing, praising the late leader for his efforts in shaping โ€œwhat the Chinese race should be todayโ€.

โ€œ[Sun] eventually overthrew the Manchu government in 1911 โ€ฆ ending 4,000 years of monarchical rule in China to establish the first republic country in Asia โ€“ the Republic of China,โ€ he said in his first public speech during his 12-day visit.

โ€” "North Korea remained unresponsive to daily routine calls with South Korea through an inter-Korean liaison communication channel and a military hotline for the fourth straight day Monday, according to the South's government.

South Korea's unification ministry said the North appears to have "unilaterally" cut off the liaison communication line, as the country has not answered routine calls since Friday, including the opening calls Monday.

The two Koreas are supposed to hold phone calls twice a day, at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., via their joint liaison channel. Calls from the liaison hotline do not take place on weekends."
