Venezuelan Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino López said on Tuesday (9) that President Nicolás Maduro has directed him to resume military relations with the neighbouring country. The statement was given during a ceremony to change posts in the National Bolivarian Armed Force (FANB).

The re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Caracas and Bogota in the face of Gustavo Petro's arrival as president of Colombia should from now on restore military cooperation between the countries, according to the Venezuelan Defence Ministry.

"I have received instructions from Nicolás Maduro to immediately contact Colombia's Ministry of Defence to restore our military relations," Padrino López said.

Gustavo Petro responded this Thursday to the Venezuelan defense minister, Vladimir Padrino López, pointing out that before reestablishing military relations, institutional and commercial ones go.

China has conducted a live-fire drill on its western border while India has confirmed it will hold joint military exercises with the US near a disputed area of the Himalayas this autumn.
 
On Saturday, the Indian Army confirmed its plans to hold drills with the United States less than 100km (62 miles) from the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border between India and western China’s Tibet autonomous region.
 
The announcement came as tensions between Beijing and Washington simmered over Taiwan, with the People’s Liberation Army winding down unprecedented military drills around the island in retaliation for US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit last week.

The annual joint exercise Yudh Abhyas, which translates to "War Practice," will be held in the South Asian nation's Uttarakhand state from Oct. 18 to 31, the U.S. Army Pacific confirmed to Nikkei Asia.

While the joint exercises are not new, the location, nature and timing all have geopolitical significance, especially coming after China's unprecedented drills surrounding Taiwan over the past week.

U.S. Army Pacific's Maj. Jonathan Lewis, who handles public affairs, told Nikkei Asia that the plan for this year's exercise focuses on cold-weather operations, and at high altitude, an environment that poses distinct challenges."
