The Southern Transitional Council (STC) declared self rule in the south in April, complicating U.N. efforts to forge a permanent ceasefire in a war that has separatists and the government fighting as nominal allies in a Saudi-led coalition against the Houthi group, who control the north.

On Saturday, the STC announced it had seized government facilities and military bases on the main island of Socotra, a sparsely populated archipelago which sits at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden on one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes."

— "Behind closed doors, a new state in the Middle East was declared: Aden, a colony in the southwestern region of Yemen. The Southern Transitional Council (STC) took control of the area, led by Maj.-Gen. Aidarus Qassem Abdulaziz al-Zoubaidi, the governor of Aden province until April 2017. Aden was a British Crown colony from 1937 to 1963.

Surprisingly, at a recent press conference the STC expressed a positive atitude towards Israel, although the question of official diplomatic relations with the Jewish State has yet to be discussed. Hani bin Breik, Vice-Chairman of the STC, tweet that "relations between Israel and Qatar are very good". In his tweet, he recalled Shimon Peres' historic visit to Doha and praised Prime-Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent visit to Oman. "Arabs and Israelis agree on a two-state solution, and Arab countries normalizing relations with Israel."
