🇿🇦🚢 Bad for business – government drops the maritime ball

The general volume of vessels and the sharp increase in maritime traffic around the Cape of Good Hope are both serving to underscore the notion that the Department of Transport (DoT), Treasury and the South African Revenue Service (Sars) are responsible for neglecting the local ocean trade industry.

According to Unathi Sonti, executive chairperson of the Maritime Business Chamber (MBC), about 13,000 vessels call at local ports every year, while more than twice that number sail around South Africa on east-west voyages.

Add to that the 53% increase in traffic around our shores since December due to liners avoiding the military conflict south of the Suez Canal, and the local maritime business could be booming because of the country’s strategic location.

Unfortunately, the poor planning and consistent underperformance in evidence at South African ports have, for now, put paid to any hopes of maximising the profit potential created by the current supply chain upheaval in the Red Sea.

Israeli fighter jets on the Gaza-Egypt border
🇷🇺🇺🇦✈️❗️ — Earlier today, January 24, 2024 AD, it was reported that a Russian Federation IL-76 cargo plane crashed at the Ukrainian-Russian border province while carrying a common sortie, with pieces falling apart inside Belgorod, Russian Federation

According to Russian media, 65 of the people onboard were Ukrainian Army Prisoners of War (PoWs) that were traveling alongside the Russian crew towards a Prisoner exchange, as it happened 7 other times this month, with the plane flying towards an airfield in Kharkov region where supposedly they would hand the Ukrainian PoWs to Ukraine and take Russian PoWs home

Russian Media claims that the plane was downed by an S-300 over Liptsy settlement in the Ukraine-controlled Kharkov region

Meanwhile it, Ukrainian media and Pro-Ukraine channels claim that the Cargo plane was actually carrying S-300s missiles and was targeted due to it, althought such a version couldnt be verified due to the lack of debris of the supposed missiles

All onboard died, including the crew.

🇸🇾📞🇸🇾🇸🇾 Marqab: SDF officials meet with SAA leadership in Hasakah in Qamishli airport tonight. Confirmed by NDF representative. Russians are also present, as always https://fxtwitter.com/thesyrianlions/status/1749847449940762857
🇺🇸📞🇸🇾❗️📰 Foreign Policy: America Is Planning to Withdraw From Syria—and Create a Disaster

➡️ Since Hamas’s brutal attack against Israel on Oct. 7 and the resulting Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip, tensions and hostilities across the Middle East have reached fever pitch. And with such a complex regional crisis playing out, it should not come as a surprise that the Biden administration is reconsidering its military priorities in the region.

➡️ It should be cause for significant concern, however, that this could involve a full withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. While no definitive decision has been made to leave, four sources within the Defense and State departments said the White House is no longer invested in sustaining a mission that it perceives as unnecessary.

➡️ Active internal discussions are now underway to determine how and when a withdrawal may take place.

➡️ The unprecedented international intervention launched in 2014 by the United States and more than 80 partner nations to defeat the terror group’s so-called territorial state was remarkably successful, with the final pocket of territory in Syria liberated in early 2019.

➡️ But the situation in neighboring Syria is more complex. With approximately 900 troops on the ground, the United States is playing an instrumental role in containing and degrading a persistent Islamic State insurgency in northeastern Syria, working alongside its local partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Cumhurbaşkanı Erdoğan:

İran ile yıllık 30 milyar dolar ticaret hacmi hedefine ulaşmak için atılacak adımları ele aldık. Terörle mücadelede komşumuz İran'ın desteğinin artarak devam etmesi gerektiğini vurguladık.

President Erdogan:

We discussed the steps to be taken to reach the annual trade volume target of 30 billion dollars with Iran. We emphasized that the support of our neighbor Iran in the fight against terrorism should continue to increase.

Iranian President Ibrahim Raeisi:

We have no hesitation in the fight against terrorism. We have lost many martyrs. The Americans openly said in their election campaigns that they founded DAESH. Terrorist organizations commit murder with the support of the US, Zionists and the West.

⚡️🇪🇬🇪🇹🇸🇴 The Somali President has officially requested the Arab Republic of Egypt to provide military assistance for the armed forces of Somalia.

In the same interview, the Somali president informs the public that thousands of Somali specialists, soldiers, and officers, have been recently trained or are currently undergoing training by Egyptian forces.

Apparently, the Ethiopian government has released some statements, implying that Egypt will soon send "lethal military aid" to Somalia after the expiration of the UNGSC sanctions that were imposed on Somalia for 31 years.

Important to note that even during the 31-year UN sanction, Egypt has sent limited military aid to Somalia to help combat the shortage of ammunition and weapons the security organs were facing.
