🇯🇵 Japan PM Kishida set to resign as ruling party faction leader

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has decided to step down as chief of his faction in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party amid a political funds scandal, according to Kyodo sources.

The LDP has recently faced criticism amid allegations that five factions, including Kishida's, underreported their revenue from political fundraising parties, from which the extra income may have been returned to some lawmakers as kickbacks.

In the wake of the political funds scandal, Kishida instructed LDP executives on Wednesday to refrain from hosting fundraising parties, but there have been increasing calls for him to leave his faction to regain public trust for the ruling party.

🇯🇵💸📃📰 Nikkei Asia Review: Japan PM Kishida to replace cabinet spokesman over slush fund allegations

➡️ Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has decided to replace Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, amid mounting pressure from the ruling and opposition parties for him to resign over allegations that he failed to report more than 10 million yen ($70,000) in income from events hosted by his party faction, several sources close to the government told Nikkei.

➡️ Kishida initially defended Matsuno, one of the most influential ministers in his cabinet, but concluded his resignation was inevitable as the slush fund scandal worsened. Matsuno is an eight-time elected politician from Seiwaken, the Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) largest faction, which was once led by Shinzo Abe, the late former prime minister. Kishida will now begin searching for a successor to Matsuno.

➡️ The resignation of the chief cabinet secretary is unusual and deals a serious blow to Kishida's government, which is already plagued by an all-time low approval rating and delays in policy decisions. Matsuno will be the fifth minister in the Kishida cabinet to resign -- mostly due to alleged misconduct or scandals -- since the cabinet was formed in November 2021.

🇬🇭 Ghana speaker hints anti-gay bill could soon be passed

Ghana’s parliamentary Speaker, Alban Bagbin, has given the clearest indication yet that proposed anti-homosexual legislation will be passed before the Christmas break.

The bill, which is in the final stages of consideration in parliament, prescribes a 10-year jail term for LGBT+ advocates and a three-year imprisonment for people who identify as gay.

It also outlaws funding for LGBT+ activities. Gay sex is already illegal in Ghana, but the new bill has included lesbianism and marriage to objects.

The main proponent of the legislation, Samuel Nartey George, said that he will expose members of parliament who have allegedly been compromised by LGBT+ advocates to stop the bill from being passed into law.

🎭 🇬🇭 🗳 Ghana — Giant billboards featuring a man in a mask and the simple message “leadership for the next generation #thenewforce” have appeared in major cities across Ghana in recent weeks. Other billboards, featuring a masked man flanked by other people with covered faces, have been rolled out as part of the campaign

🔶️ The campaign issued a statement late last month in which it said the identity of the masked person will be revealed in “the shortest possible time,” along with “policy objectives and goals.” However, a spokesperson did not respond to Semafor Africa when asked when the person’s identity would be made public.

🔶️ Why is this happening? Ghana will hold presidential elections in exactly a year. Power has alternated between the two main political parties — the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) — since the country’s switch to multi-party democracy in 1992. However, critics of the main parties say their governance has been marred by nepotism, corruption, and financial mismanagement.
