🇺🇸 🚫🇪🇪🇱🇻🇱🇹 Will NATO counterattack into the Baltics?

Although NATO is well known to have bases and combat groups in the three Baltic countries, the role of these formations as well as the role of the native militaries has often left a questionable taste in the mouth of any observer. With the Latvian military being the greatest example of the point to be made here, the intentions of each Baltic military is not one of pitched battle, but rather a constant withdrawal and disruption. When you, and your allies have doctrine that're essentially just stalling actions betting on the assumed arrival of reinforcements that will help counter attack the enemy and win the day, you'd better have a very good reason for assuming that will be the case. Recently however, some documents that came out of Poland put a massive question mark on this matter.

“The plan for the use of the armed forces, approved by the then head of the Defense Ministry Klich, stipulated that the country’s independent defense would last a maximum of two weeks, and in seven days the enemy would reach the right bank of the Vistula.”

This is a statement made by Minister of Defense Mariusz Błaszczaka concerning Defense Plan 2011, the primary reason for calling into question the reliability of NATO coming to the rescue of the Baltic countries. Although this document is no longer in use, more recent exercises and simulations such as Zima 20 show that regardless of NATO aid for Poland, it's possible for Russia and her allies to arrive at the Vistula within 5 days of an invasion, and battles to save Warsaw to begin. Naturally that makes the resupply, liberation, or reinforcement of the Baltics very difficult if your primary staging ground for that hypothetical assistance is not doing so well.

This, of course, doesn't even account for Latvia's hypothesized scenario for a war between itself and Russia, which alone will make the triggering of Article 5 nearly impossible. We discussed this scenario a bit in a past article and a telegra.ph post as well.

🇬🇼 Gunfire broke out in Guinea-Bissau capital overnight, continued through morning

Heavy gunfire was reported in Guinea-Bissau's capital on Friday night and morning hours after some National Guard soldiers went to free a detained minister and a senior state official.

Members of the National Guard took the officials before seeking refuge in barracks south of the capital.

Special forces then intervened, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

Calm is said to have been restored later.

Earlier, National Guard soldiers later in the evening invaded the police cells, located near Bandim market, "with AK-47 weapons and bazookas" and extricated the detained officials.

The finance minister, Souleiman Seidi, and the secretary of state for the treasury, Antonio Monteiro, had been detained amid investigations into the alleged irregular withdrawal of $10m of state funds.

On Friday morning, regional stabilisation forces deployed by the regional West African bloc Ecowas were seen patrolling the streets.

🇬🇼 Guinea-Bissau President Embalo says a coup was foiled on Friday

Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo said that gunfire and clashes that had erupted in the capital of the West African nation on Friday were an attempted coup.

"I can assure you that the events of December 1, 2023, are yet another attempted coup and those responsible will suffer serious consequences," Embalo told.

Clashes between two army factions broke out in Bissau on Thursday night and continued on Friday after national guard soldiers freed an opposition minister who was detained in a corruption investigation.

At least six people were killed during a failed attempt to overthrow Embalo in February 2022.

"On February 1, 2022, we witnessed the same scenario. We still need to put an end once and for all on these upheavals in Guinea-Bissau," Embalo said.
