🇱🇻🚫🏥 Regional hospitals, and family doctors beginning to go into financial crises has begun to force patients to seek healthcare in Riga instead.

According to an interview with Normunds Staņēvičs, Chairman of the Board of the Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS), on the radio show "Domskaya Ploshad'":

🗣“We receive about 250 patients a day, of which 120 are brought by ambulance. Of these 250 people, 40% remain in the hospital, respectively, 60% could go to their family or regional hospitals.”

Such an influx of people has left the university hospital in an impossible state, according to Staņēvičs. He went on to propose that the way to deal with this imbalance between regional and city/university hospitals is to completely reform the healthcare system, to bring new life into the family doctors and regional clinics that have been neglected by poor choices in expenditures by the ministry of health.

This is most likely the best time to be discussing such things publicly, since it was only within the last few weeks that budget planning as begun to be formalized or laid out on paper. Already the Ministry of Health has been complaining about their lack of funding, albeit not for the sake of these neglected hospitals, but rather for COVID-19. According to the draft order, they require just over 9.8 million euros to cover everything related to administering, receiving, and destroying vaccines. However, despite the Ministry of Health seeing to their own needs, there has been a small amount of funding given to family doctors. For the purposes of contacting over 320 thousand patients who have not underwent a checkup in at least 3 years, the government has allocated 5.5 million euros. This may seen like a lot to some on paper, however on average each practice must visit 250 people, and although the amount of funds varies from office to office based on the number of patients, the number averages only at around 4.2 thousand euros per doctor.
