🇱🇻 The Latgalian Grand Congress has begun today

From September 22 - 23 the Rezekne Technical Academy will be host to representatives from the European Parliament, Latvian Government, Media organizations, and members of the Educational institutions within Latgalia.

Topics of discussion will range from the state of Latgalian representation and identity, to language and cultural education taking place within their homeland. Chairman Agris Bitāns, of the Latgolys Kongresa Lāmumu Izpiļdis Padūmis (LKLIP), has stated that the sustainability of their identity will also be one of the primary topics for the congress, and one they hope to provide solutions for in ways such as coordination with the Poles, who may be able to help the Latgalian people develop their own tourist industry.

This congress is the culminated work of the Latgalian Cultural Association (LKB), who for almost 30 years have strived to bring forth a revival of their people through acts of preservation and economic development. Although the gravity of the congress is not as apparent as the original Latgalian congress of 1917, this still serves as a well deserved milestone for this people.

Today, September 22, 2023, the congress will specifically address situations such as the economic welfare of the Latgalian people, their quality of life, and the potentials for development of the region. This is probably the most important discussion to be had, as times are proving to turn for the worst in rural Latvia, which makes up the majority of Latgalia itself. On a more interesting note, however, Latgalians will for the first time discuss their involvement with EU border strengthening policies, possibly in reference to Latvia's new plans to fortify the border with Russia and to gradually close the border with Belarus.
