JNIM militants launched a major attack on Burkinabè forces last night in the northern town of Koumbri, near the Malian border.

An investigative series by French media outlet Les Jours has described the mass movement of young African men into the Sahara, prospecting for gold.
The Saharan gold rush is seeing thousands, even hundreds of thousands of men from across the Sahel and Sahara crisscross the desert, settling in unexpected places and confounding demographic researchers.
According to the article, Mauritania has become just the latest magnet for gold panners, endowed with considerable untapped reserves and a permissive attitude to the trend.
In one instance, 40,000 men converged one morning on a newly discovered Mauritanian prospect.
