🇲🇽 Mexico’s ruling party candidates wrap up campaigns before poll

The presidential candidates for Mexico’s ruling party made their last bids to voters before a nationwide survey begins to determine whom the party will select to represent it in the 2024 election.

The Morena party of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is not eligible to run again next year, has decided that candidates will have to end their campaign tours this weekend.

Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, who has led in most polls so far, headed to Veracruz state on the east coast, while ex-Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, another top candidate, ended his tour on Sunday with a speech at an auditorium in Mexico City.

Morena will announce its pick on Sept. 6. Whoever ends up with greater support in the nationwide survey will be designated the party’s national coordinator, since it’s too early to announce formal candidates under election rules.

The Economy Minister and presidential candidate for the (UxP) is due to discuss an agreement that would allow import payments to be made using the yuan from the swap agreement with China.

A few days ago, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad announced that Brazil had approached Argentina with a proposal to settle Brazilian exports in Chinese currency.

🇳🇬 Nigeria strikes illegal oil refining sites in air raids

The Nigerian air force says it carried out strikes on illegal oil refining sites in the Niger Delta region on Sunday.

The force said it had destroyed several illegal sites in oil-rich Rivers state and also targeted a boat that was loaded with crude oil and headed for the open waters.

Nigeria has been cracking down on oil thieves in the Niger Delta, burning crude-laden ships and small illegal refineries, but aerial bombardments are uncommon.

Most of the illegal oil refineries tend to be located in the creeks away from communities but environmentalists have condemned the continual burning of the refineries.

French Soldier Fatally Wounded While Supporting Iraqi Anti-Terrorism Operation, Two Others Injured

The French presidency has confirmed that "Sergent" Nicolas Mazier has been killed in action while providing support to an Iraqi unit engaged in an anti-terrorist operation. The incident unfolded on Monday, according to official sources.

The French and Iraqi forces were ambushed by ISIS in northeastern Kirkuk, bordering Saladin province. They were engaged in a confrontation lasting “more than five hours”.

Among the personnel involved, two other French soldiers sustained injuries. It is noteworthy that all these soldiers were affiliated with the distinguished parachutist unit, CPA 10.

This unfortunate occurrence marks the third instance of loss within the French military in recent days. The previous two casualties were attributed to a separate car accident.
