🇹🇼🇺🇸 Taiwan vice president stops over in New York on way to Paraguay

Taiwan Vice President William Lai arrived in New York at the start of a sensitive US stopover.

Lai, the front-runner to become Taiwan's president in elections in January, is officially making only transit stops in the United States on his way to and from Paraguay for the swearing in of its president next week.

Neither Taiwan nor the US have given exact details about his US schedule, which both are aiming to keep low key, according to officials briefed on the trip.

🇨🇳🇹🇼 China launches drills around Taiwan in response to VP's US trip

China's
military began drills around Taiwan on Saturday, saying it was a "serious warning" to separatist forces in a widely expected response to a visit by Vice President William Lai to the United States.

The People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command, which has responsibility for the area around Taiwan, said in a brief statement it was carrying out joint naval and air combat readiness patrols around the island.

It said it was also holding joint exercises and training of naval and air forces, focusing on subjects such as ship-aircraft coordination and seizing control, to test the forces' "actual combat capabilities".

🇹🇼🇨🇳 Taipei mayor to visit China

The mayor of Taipei will visit Shanghai at the end of this month for an annual city forum, his office said.

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an, from the main opposition party the Kuomintang, which traditionally favors close relations with China, will go to Shanghai on Aug. 29-31 for the Taipei-Shanghai City Forum, which was first held in 2010.

The Kuomintang has pushed to resume contacts with China since pandemic controls were lifted, saying that dialogue was needed now more than ever given the tensions over Taiwan.

🇯🇵🇺🇸🇦🇺🇵🇭 Japan, US, Australia eye ship deployment to Philippines for drill

Japan
, the United States and Australia are considering sending their vessels carrying aircraft to the Philippines to conduct a trilateral naval drill next week in the South China Sea.

🇷🇺🇧🇭🇺🇸 Russian journalists from Izvestia uncovered a prostitution ring which supplied underage Russian girls to clients in Bahrain.

The people requesting the services of the girls were mainly Arabs from Bahrain and the surrounding countries but also American officers from the US Navy's 5th Fleet which is stationed in Manama, the capital of Bahrain.

The girls, aged between 13 and 17 years old were lured to the country by a group of Russian citizens which would seize their passports and other IDs to prevent them from escaping the country and then handing them over to their Bahraini partners.

The ring is active since at least 2013 and at least one girl died due to physical trauma at the hands of one of the abusers after trying to escape the hotel where she was housed in. They were sold to clients for between 7000 to 14.000 USD.

The journalists, which worked undercover, also found out that a lot of the girls got pregnant and were forced to carry out abortion late into the pregnancy with some giving birth to dead fetuses which would end up thrown into garbage bins.

Izvestia discovered that the Russian girls were significantly more expensive than the girls brought there from Thailand, Uzbekistan or Vietnam.

🇩🇪💸📉📰 Euronews: Germany expected to be only major economy not to grow this year

— "According to the latest figures from the International Monetary Fund, Germany's GDP is forecast to drop 0.3% this year while other countries continue to grow.

• The German economy is still failing to grow, figures showed on Friday, as the country that should be the industrial powerhouse for all of Europe struggles with high energy prices, rising borrowing costs and a lagging rebound from key trading partner China.

• Economic output in Germany stagnated in the April-to-June quarter, the Federal Statistics Office said. That follows a decline of 0.1% in the first three months of the year and a drop of 0.4% in the last three months of 2022 as the energy shock from Russia's war in Ukraine echoed through Europe's largest economy."

🇩🇪💸📉📰 Politico: Europe's Economiic Engine is stalling: The Deindustrialization of Germany

— "Germany’s biggest companies are ditching the fatherland.

• Chemical giant BASF has been a pillar of German business for more than 150 years, underpinning the country’s industrial rise with a steady stream of innovation that helped make “Made in Germany” the envy of the world.

• But its latest moonshot — a $10 billion investment in a state-of-the-art complex the company claims will be the gold standard for sustainable production — isn’t going up in Germany. Instead, it’s being erected 9,000 kilometers away in China.

• Even as it chases the future in Asia, BASF, founded on the banks of the Rhine in 1865 as the Badische Anilin- & Sodafabrik, is scaling back in Germany. In February, the company announced the shutdown of a fertilizer plant in its hometown of Ludwigshafen and other facilities, which led to about 2,600 job cuts.

• “We are increasingly worried about our home market,” BASF Chief Executive Martin Brudermüller told shareholders in April, noting that the company lost €130 million in Germany last year. “Profitability is no longer anywhere near where it should be.”"

🇵🇦🌊💥More than 200 cargo ships are stuck in the Panama Canal due to a record drought in the region. Many of them have run aground.

Water shortages caused by the worst drought in 100 years have forced the canal operators to reduce the flow of traffic and it could have serious consequences for the global supply chain.

Every day that these ships sit idle, millions of dollars are lost in the sector.
