🇳🇬🇳🇪 Traditional leaders mediate the Niger crisis

Nigeria's former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, along with Niger's Sultan of Damagaram, Aboubacar Sanda, were received by the President of the CNSP and de facto Nigérien head of state Abdourrahmane Tchiani today to discuss the ongoing Niger coup crisis.

The former emir and the sultan carry significant influence, both symbols of traditional Islamic political authority in the shared Hausa cultural environment of Niger and Northern Nigeria.

That the Niger military government would meet with these leaders is all the more significant given that General Tchiani recently snubbed prominent US official Victoria Nuland, as well as an entire ECOWAS delegation to Niger.

🌐🇻🇪BRICS+: The Venezuelan dictatorship reaffirmed its interest in joining the New Development Bank of BRICS during a meeting between the regime's Chancellor, Yván Gil, and the advisor of the financial institution, Alessandro Teixeira.

During the meeting, which took place alongside the Amazonian Countries Summit, where leaders of eight governments are gathered in Belém, the Chancellor reiterated Venezuela's interest in joining what he described as an "important economic bloc."

The BRICS have a scheduled meeting this month in South Africa, and Venezuela will seize this opportunity to "build relationships" and seek support in its attempt to be accepted by these countries, which currently maintain governments with close affinities to the Chavista regime.

🇨🇴 Colombian President wants to create “Amazon NATO” to defend jungle “with weapons”

Colombian President Gustavo Petro Urrego Tuesday suggested during his speech at the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) Summit in the Brazilian city of Belém that an international environmental court should be created to prosecute crimes in the area, in addition to an “Amazon NATO” to defend the region “with weapons”.

“If the engine of the Amazon is increasingly illegal and represents a crime against humanity, how do we defend life? With reasons, but also with weapons,” Petro argued. In his view, such a court would be useful to “judge crimes” against the largest rainforest on the planet. In recent years, drug trafficking networks have expanded within the Amazon, along with deforestation, illegal mining, and violence against indigenous people.

He also suggested signing a “military treaty” similar to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to confront crime in the area and advocated the promotion of a “common scientific research center” in which scientists from the eight ACTO countries would study the tropical forest.

🇧🇷🇨🇴🚩🌳🌐 — Gustavo Petro proposes creating an Amazonian NATO to defend the rainforest "with weapons"; the Colombian president states that any country can join and invest to aid in defense, and if possible, ensure "reliable resource exploration."

"We, the states that are here, could establish an international Amazonian environmental court to adjudicate crimes against the Amazon, acknowledging the rights of the rainforest. I would propose a military and judicial treaty,"
Petro added.

During his speech, the President cautioned that safeguarding the rainforest not only involves rationale but also necessitates the use of arms. "The threat is increasingly illegal and constitutes a crime against humanity," Petro emphasized in relation to the offenses that endanger this 'green lung.'

The statement caused discomfort for President Lula (PT).

🚩🌐🇧🇷💥🇨🇴🌳Colombian President Gustavo Petro strongly criticized President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) during his speech at the Amazon Summit. A topic of conflict among Amazonian countries, Petro reiterated his opposition to oil exploration in the region. According to him, a stance contrary to his is a "denialist" behavior among those who claim to be progressist.

"Politics cannot stand apart from the economic interests derived from fossil capital. Thus, science despairs [...], seeing in politics a kind of silent barrier that cannot act. This is why COPs fail."

The exploration of oil in the Amazon region has been a contentious issue among the eight countries that share the biome. Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname do not rule out this possibility. In Brazilian territory, in fact, Lula has supported the exploration of resources in the mouth of the Amazon River.

On the other hand, Peru and Colombia have been strong opponents of this type of exploration. "We are on the brink of the extinction of life, and it is in this decade that we must make decisions. It is us, the politicians, who must make these decisions, during this short presidential period that we have. What are we doing beyond speeches like these?" emphasized the Colombian President.

Petro believes that environmental policies need to go beyond the desire to eradicate deforestation in the biome, as President Lula has advocated.

🌐📑🇫🇷 🔥🇧🇷Feed the beast: French President Emmanuel Macron defended the trade barriers approved by the European Parliament, which have been criticized by Brazil and other countries in the region during the Amazon Summit this week.

In a tweet, the French president stated that his country was a "driving force behind the historic decision of the European Union to no longer contribute to imported deforestation." The determination mentioned by Macron prohibits the import of products originating from deforested areas.

The measure is contested by Brazil and other countries that are members of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO). It is also expected that there will be points in the Belém Agreement, to be signed by the countries at the end of this week's Summit, addressing trade barriers like those imposed by the European Union.
