🇳🇬 Nigerian senate rejects motion to free separatist leader
The Nigerian senate has rejected a motion by south-east region senators for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra.
Imo West Senator Osita Izunaso, who moved the motion, said setting Kanu free would end the sit-at-home orders enforced in the region by gunmen.
"When people are forced to stay at home and businesses remain closed, productivity declines and income is reduced, affecting livelihoods and economic growth," he said.
However, the senate rejected the pleas from the south-east lawmaker, and instead asked the federal government to ensure those who enforce the orders are arrested.
Kanu has been in detention since June 2021 even after a court dropped all the terror charges against him in October 2022.

🇺🇸 🇨🇳 The Coming War With China | Malcom Kyeyune
In three short years, the world has witnessed the worldwide Covid lockdowns, America’s dismal retreat from Afghanistan, and the return of land war to Europe. But there are reasons to believe the dramatic events the 2020s have offered thus far might be only the beginning. If you follow the chatter of Beltway mandarins, an ominous change has taken place over the past year when it comes to China. A decade ago, the Middle Kingdom was a distant concern; five years later, it was viewed as silly and uncouth of Donald Trump to rail constantly against Beijing.
But in 2023, all that has changed drastically: There is now open talk in Washington about a potential war with China, and soon. To take just one example: In a conversation hosted earlier this year by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Reps. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) and Jason Crow (D-Colo.) spoke as if a war with China is highly probable, even guaranteed. Crow went so far as to suggest that the United States abolish any caps on how many of its military personnel in uniform are permitted to work on Taiwan as instructors, war planners, and military attaché. Such a move—which itself would move the United States and China closer to war—is warranted, according to Crow, because “the cat is out of the bag,” and “it’s very clear we’ve chosen sides.”

Exclusive: New Taiwan weapons package to be announced soon, US officials say
The United States is expected to announce as early as Friday that it will provide Taiwan with military assistance worth more than $300 million, two U.S. officials told Reuters, a move likely to anger China.
— " Lawmakers on Wednesday unanimously passed an initial agreement reached under the United States-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century that focused on basic trade facilitation and transparency standards and procedures.
Thanking the legislators for their support, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) expressed her hope on Facebook that the agreement could create more business opportunities for Taiwan and contribute to a more secure global supply chain.
Citing Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁), Cabinet spokesman Lin Tze-luen (林子倫) said the passage, which followed the U.S. Senate's approval of the pact on July 18, should pave the way for stronger bilateral trade relations.
Taiwan and the U.S. signed the first set of terms under the initiative on June 1, which was focused on making customers and border procedures and regulatory practices more efficient and make bilateral trade easier, faster, and more transparent."

— "The White House has decided it will bar Hong Kong’s top government official from attending a major economic summit in the United States this fall, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the matter, in the latest test of President Biden’s bid to reset relations with China.
Chief Executive John Lee, along with 10 other Hong Kong and Chinese officials, was sanctioned by Washington in 2020 after implementing a national security law, imposed by Beijing, that enabled the targeting of pro-democracy leaders, tarnished the reputation of the courts and earned international condemnation as leaders sought to silence dissent.
Lee, then Hong Kong’s security chief, was elevated last year to chief executive, handpicked by Beijing to continue what critics say is a broader campaign of repression in the once-semiautonomous city. He has helped execute Beijing’s reimagining of the territory, where institutions from schools to the media now operate under new red lines that have eroded freedoms."

🇿🇼 Zimbabwe high court disqualifies 12 opposition candidates
A high court has disqualified 12 members of Zimbabwe’s main opposition party from contesting August parliamentary elections.
The judge ruled that the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) membership applications were submitted after the cut-off time of 16:00 on 21 June - the day when nomination courts sat to receive applications.
It means that the ruling Zanu-PF party candidates will be elected unopposed in three seats in the country's second-largest city, Bulawayo, previously an opposition stronghold.
