Ingress 最初是怎麼來的呢？事源於一位名為 Ben Jackland 的普通人，他在拍賣網站買下了一部黑色手機，而當他在街上或一些雕像附近在使用該手機時，總是會莫名出現故障，於是他就把這些遭遇放到網絡，但是也因此引起了神秘黑衣人的注意。（而這些故障就是他手機內置的 Ingress 對 Portal 對 XM 有反應所引起的）
