Hmm, interesting, actually I like to do a short banner Mission as souvenir whenever I visit a new town. So if you don’t have time for missions, are you in the hobbit of getting some souvenirs from the cities you visit? Maybe keys? Or off-scanner artifacts?

Oh yes! I collect souvenir keys of all the airports and cities I visit. I also collect shot glasses too from cities I travel to. I have over 100 shot glasses from various places.

Geez. 100. Any funny stories you wanna share about them? I know a friend in Germany who collects beer glasses (the big ones) that drunk people left on street curbs

I don't have any funny stories. But some of these are very cool. I have some made out of wood that I got from going to a famous park. I have one that I got when I was 13. It is my oldest one. I have one that is shaped like a skull. Some very tall ones, short and fat ones. All sizes and shapes. I have one that I got when I went and interviewed with Niantic for my job. Lots of stories and memories in these shot glasses.

Ah, no problem. Though, now that you’ve mentioned your interview with Niantic... Here comes the juicy part! Tell us about the story of your recruitment into Niantic! What was your first reaction? Any second thoughts? Who did you tell first?

I applied for the job like a lot of people did. I wasn't really looking for a new job. I had a great career and job that I was very happy with. However, my wife suggested I apply because I was spending all of my free time (when I was not with the family) playing Ingress. Her thought was, it seems like I had two jobs. So why not just get one that I would get paid for instead of having two and only getting paid for one. It was a long process. It took several months. But ultimately they made me an offer in December of 2015. I accepted and I started January of 2016. It was very hard to keep it a secret. There was an Anomaly in Oakland that I went to. I could not tell anyone and I'm bad at lying. I'm surprised I was able to keep it a secret for as long as I did. The interview process was pretty straight forward. I had a couple of phone interivews then a bunch of in-person interviews that I had to fly to San Francisco for. I don't have any regrets. I love love love love what I do. I remember where I was when I got the offer. I was actually doing a Mission with some friends on the Berkley, California university campus and I had to step away from them to take the phone call. It was awakward. I think they knew something was going on.
