This set the precedence that rightwing Conservative control would be removed from all colleges with force. Keep in mind it was mostly Dixie where colleges were solidly rightwing until the above occupation. Blacks were basically sent in as a third column to cause dissent and de-homogenize these colleges. The system knew they'd complain and wine about our flags and customs. With blacks in you also got new professors who would tolerate them and push their own leftist ideals. We shouldn't forget that until the 1960s we had solid control over institutions especially in the Deep South.
