1-17. Honorable service is support and defense of the Constitution, the American people, and the national interest in a manner consistent with the Army ethic. Army professionals serve honorably by obeying the laws of the Nation and all legal orders. Army forces reject and report illegal, unethical, or immoral orders or actions.

1-18. Army professionals contribute honorable service as they accomplish the mission, perform their duty, and live their lives making ethical decisions and taking ethical actions. Living by and upholding the Army ethic means that its moral principles are woven through all facets Army life. Love of country and family, preservation of peace, and defense of the American people are values inherent to the ethos—this is why we serve.
