The Jesuits Who Ran the Third Reich (Part One).
Fr. Walter Schellenberg S.J., SD Intelligence Chief.
Walter Schellenberg was one of the most prominent members of Himmlerβs SS. He rapidly rose through the ranks of the Schutzstaffel during the 1930βs becoming SS-BrigadefΓΌhrer and Intelligence Chief of the Ausland division of the SS unit known as the Sicherheitsdienst (SD). The SD was the very first Nazi intelligence service and was a sister organization to the Gestapo. Schellenberg continued to be an influential member of both the SS and the SD throughout his career, seeing that he was the personal protege of founding SD head, devout Roman Catholic Reinhard Heydrich.
Manvell and Fraenkel inform us that Schellenberg was a pupil of the Jesuits.
βWalter Schellenberg was, as we have seen, one of the intellectuals of the S.S. He had been educated in a Jesuit school; his university training in law and medicine at Bonn was over by the time he was twenty-two.β
-Heinrich Himmler: The Sinister Life of the Head of the SS and Gestapo by Roger Manvell and Heinrich Fraenkel, page 109.
Not only was Schellenberg Jesuit educated, the notable historian Edmund L. Blandford reveals that Walter Schellenberg was himself an βex-Jesuit.ΒΉβ
βWalter Schellenberg was an ex-Jesuit and trainee lawyer who had, on his university professorβs advice, joined the Nazi Party and SSβ¦β
-SS Intelligence: The Nazi Secret Service by Edmund L. Blandford, page 70.
Furthermore, the reputed historian Reinhard Doerries discloses the fact that an ordained, collared, Jesuit priest collaborating with the SD served as an adviser and liaison to Schellenberg:
βAnother go-between instructing him (Schellenberg) on behalf of the SD appears to have been a Jesuit priest who considerably impressed the young SS man.β

The Jesuits Who Ran the Third Reich (Part II-A).
Fr. Albert Hartl S.J., the βRenegadeβ Jesuit.
Albert Hartl while still openly operating as a Catholic priest, started out as a paid informant for the SD. He subsequently became a protege of Reinhard Heydrich, head of the SD (just like Schellenberg) and thereafter βrenouncedβ the priesthood to join the SD. In 1935 Hartl became the SDβs Chief of Church information.
In a recently declassified OSS report dated January 9th, 1947 we learn several pertinent facts:

In 1935 Hartl became the SDβs Chief of Church information.
In a recently declassified OSS report dated January 9th, 1947 we learn several pertinent facts:
Concerning his time as a student prior to the priesthood we read,
βWhile a student, Hartl joined the Jesuit youth movement, Neu Deutschland, which embodied the Boy Scout principles of outdoor life on a Catholic basis, and was soon put in charge of the Theologians Fachschaft for all Germany. Hartl wrote frequently for the publication of this organization. During his early student days, Hartl supported himself by working during vacations, but after 1925, owing to numerous scholarships he received, he was able to devote more time to the Bund Neu Deutschland and thus came to know many of the leading Jesuits of Germany.βΒΉ
Regarding Hartlβs Church intelligence service we observe,
βin 1933 efforts were immediately launched to establish a church intelligence system within the SDβ¦ Dr. August Wilhelm Patin, Stiftskanonifus and instructor of religion at the Ludwigs Realschule in Munich and a cousin of Himmler, was entrusted with this taskβ¦ In the latter part of 1933 and the beginning of 1934 Maj a D and SS-Stubaf Walter Illges received an order from Himmler and Heydrich to begin the systematic organization of a Church Division (Kirchen/Abt) within the SDβ¦ The Kirchen Referat of the newly erected SD Hauptamt in Berlin was at first under the direction of Illgesβ¦ In 1935 Illges retired and Wolf received a special order from Himmler to make a scientific study of Bolshevism.
Hartl then became Kirchen Referant of SD Hauptamt
⦠The Gestapo⦠also had its own Kirchen Referant for executive functions⦠The difference between this intelligence service and the intelligence service of the Kirchen Referat of the SD Hauptamt was one both of purpose and method.
Hartl states that the purpose of his intelligence service was to keep all leading personalities of the reich continually informed about the general church-political situation in Germany.
To achieve this, Hartl saw to it that he remained in friendly contact with the higher clergy and at the same time organized an intensive network of spies within their ranks
.
Hartl, who had made an intensive study of the intelligence methods of
the Jesuits
, used them as a model
β¦ When Hartl was promoted to Kirchen Referent in the SD Hauptamt in 1935, he immediately set about building up his intelligence
along the lines of the
Jesuit
information services
.βΒΉ
The historian David J. Mitchell sates,
βIn 1939 a certain
Albert Hartl,
who had become a priest at the persuasion of his
Jesuit
teacher
but in 1933 left the Church to join the SS
and become '
Chief of Church Information
', sought an opinion on the Nazi euthanasia programme from Dr. Josef Mayer, professor of moral theology at the Catholic University of Paderborn.
Employing what he called
the
Jesuit
technique of probabilism
β¦ He concluded that as there were reasonable grounds for and against euthanasia of the mentally ill it could be considered '
defensible
'.
Mayer's verdict, complete with a lengthy historical summary and quotes from St Thomas Aquinas, was shown to Protestant and Catholic leaders, including the papal nuncio, Cesare Orsenigo. There was no outright condemnation and the programme was launched.β

Fr. Albert Hartl S.J., the βRenegadeβ Jesuit.

He subsequently became a protege of Reinhard Heydrich, head of the SD (just like Schellenberg) and thereafter βrenouncedβ the priesthood to join the SD. In 1935 Hartl became the SDβs Chief of Church information.
In my previous post, I covered how Hartl was intimately involved in the Jesuit youth movement as a student having written for one of its foremost organizations and in the course of time he acquainted himself with some of Germanyβs most powerful Jesuits. He then was persuaded to enter the priesthood upon the recommendation of his Jesuit instructor, afterwards he βleftβ the priesthood to join a paramilitary organization fashioned after the Jesuit order known as the SS. Later moving on to head his own division within the SSβ intelligence service, the SD, which was concerned with monitoring the religio-political affairs of the Catholic Church. He also notably sought justification for the Nazi euthanasia program from a Catholic theologian who promptly used Jesuitical probabilism to rationalize its use. We thus now continue with several other germane facts.
In a recently declassified OSS report dated January 9th, 1947 we learn the following:
That Hartlβs sister was a Jesuitess,
And that he would frequent certain monasteries,
Professor of History, Colin D. Heaton makes the following comments when discussing Hartlβs relationship to the Jesuit monastery in Krakow,
In light of these facts, it is more than reasonable to conclude that Albert Hartl had to be a sheep-dipped Jesuit serving Rome from within the confines of Himmlerβs SS. As a matter of fact, Heinrich MΓΌller, the famous head of Hitlerβs Gestapo, was of like opinion:
Former visiting associate professor to the Jesuit Orderβs Loyola University of Chicago David J. Alvarez states,
Not only that, Stanley J. Marks, a man who familiarized himself with scores of classified Vatican documents, confirmed that Hartl was a priest of no other order than that of the Jesuits!
