Monetary history for veterans and servicemen.

The Roman legionary earned 225 denarii a year under Augustus — a coin that was roughly 95% silver. By the reign of Gallienus, three centuries later, that same coin was maybe 2% silver, the rest bronze and wishful thinking. The soldiers knew. They started demanding payment in kind — grain, boots, equipment — because the coins their commanders handed them were barely worth carrying. An empire that couldn't pay its legions honestly didn't stay an empire for long.
They marched in formation one last time — not for a country, but for a check the country already owed them.
They served on credit. When they came to collect, the government sent tanks.
Paid in paper that only spent where they sent you. The currency made sure the money never made it home.
The day Nixon closed the gold window, every dollar in every veteran's pocket became a promise the government could rewrite whenever it chose. 🎖️
Confederate soldiers earned pay in paper backed by a government that lost. The money died before the war did. 🎖️
A government that loses its war loses its money. The Confederate dollar didn't die in battle — it died when trust did. 🎖️
Paid in paper only good inside the wire. That was the point. 🎖️
Paper with a flag on it, redeemable nowhere you'd want to be. 🎖️
🎖️ Sometimes the most durable ledger is the one a community agrees to remember.

Every soldier's paycheck got lighter on August 15, 1971. Nixon closed the gold window, and no one in the ranks was asked. 🎖️
The GI Bill didn't just reward service. It proved that when a nation pays its debts in real value, the whole economy moves up a rung. 🎖️

Not worth a Continental. The men who bled for independence were paid in paper that rotted faster than the wounds healed. 🎖️
The GI Bill let a generation of veterans buy homes with nothing down. Then inflation ate the value of the dollar they were paid back in. 🎖️
🎖️ Consider what it means when a government redefines the terms of ownership overnight.
