About 10 hours ago, Polkadot experienced an exploit on Hyperbridge (Polkadot's cross-chain bridge to Ethereum).

🖤 Specifically
🖤 ​​The mint attacker created approximately 1 billion fake DOT tokens on Ethereum through a vulnerability in the Hyperbridge gateway contract.
🖤 ​​They forged cross-chain messages, hijacked the admin rights of the DOT bridged token contract, and then dumped the tokens for approximately $237,000 - $250,000 (equivalent to ~108 ETH).

🖤 BUT:
🖤 ​​Does not affect the native DOT on Polkadot Relay Chain, parachains, and the Polkadot ecosystem.
🖤 ​​This only affects DOT bridged via Hyperbridge on Ethereum.
🖤 ​​The DOT bridged across Snowbridge (the official trustless bridge) remains safe.
🖤 ​​The price of DOT dropped by approximately 4-6% in the short term following the incident, and some exchanges like Upbit and Bithumb temporarily suspended bridged DOT deposits/withdrawals.

🖤 This is a typical risk of cross-chain bridges (which has happened with many other projects), a dark spot in the bridge system for which there is no solution yet.
