‘87% of plastic waste being collected in Bihar’
With the active involvement of the government and the participation of CSOs in the state, out of the total plastic waste generated, 87% is collected. The less recycling percentage is also because of the fact that the responsibility of recycling primarily falls on the informal sector, including waste pickers, aggregators, informal recycling units, and some support from urban local authorities. Thus, it requires the process of institutionalization where there is a need to shift the focus towards waste recycling and adopting a circular economy model. A circular model of plastic waste can not only help us deal with the ever-rising volume of plastic waste but also create a parallel economy where waste is not treated just as waste because it also has value.

Bihar State Targets Planting 433.93 Lakh Saplings in the Current Financial Year
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar aseked the officials to properly execute the work-plan of planting 433.93 lakh saplings under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan in FY 2023-24 with an aim to increase the state’s total green cover to 17% from the existing 15%.
After bifurcation of Jharkhand from Bihar (in 2000), the remaining Bihar’s green cover reduced to 9%. The state government began a ‘Hariyali Mission’ in 2012 and a target of planting 24 crore saplings was fixed with an aim to increase the state’s green cover. Around 22 crores saplings have so far been planted. With this, the state’s green cover has increased to 15%. We aim to increase the state’s green cover to 17%,” the CM said at the meeting.

‘Bihar’s cycle scheme for girls a hit in Zambia, unveiled in 6 African nations’
The Nitish Kumar government’s famed Bihar’s “Mukhyamantri Balika Cycle Yojana” for girl students in Bihar, which is widely acknowledged for its phenomenal success in reducing gender disparity at the level of secondary education since its launch in 2006-07, has achieved equally positive results in faraway Zambia and has been adopted in six African countries.
Professor Nishith Prakash of Northeastern University, Boston, USA, who carried out a study in Zambia a year after the model was introduced there in 2015-16, said the results were remarkable in drawing girls to education.
The absenteeism of girls in schools reduced by 27%, late arrivals by 66% and average commuting time to schools by 35%. The girls now feel in control of their own lives. Now, they could aspire to higher things with a much better self-image. A desire to delay marriage and pregnancy to an optimal age was also induced in them.
