New Buddhist pilgrimage site consecrated in Gaya

The Gayasisha hill, also known as Brahmayoni hill (south of the Gaya town), has been developed has the new Buddhist pilgrimage site.

The place where Buddha delivered Adittapariyaya Sutta (fire sermon) was consecrated by the 12th Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche.

The new site, which includes a fire sermon stupa, has now been opened for the visit by Buddhists and other devotees.

The project has got support from Buddhist spiritual leaders from different countries including Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Hongkong.

92.12% People are in Favour of Liquor Prohibition: Survey

A survey by the Bihar government has hailed the liquor prohibition in the state, with 95.61% of the respondents claiming they left drinking since April 1, 2016, the day the Nitish Kumar government imposed the liquor ban.

The survey was conducted by PanchayatI Raj chair of Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) through Bihar Rural Livelihood Mission (Jeevika) across 33,805 villages in 534 blocks in all the 38 districts in the state, covering a total of 1,022,467 people.

In the study, just 4.39% people admitted they were still consuming liquor despite prohibition.

The report says 92.12% people are in favour of prohibition.
However, the survey found even higher percentage in favour of prohibition when it came to women. Almost all women surveyed (99.36%) backed prohibition, saying it had brought them peace and family bliss.

The findings of the report also showed that 87% of the people believed that there has been an increase in household income after prohibition while 72% people surveyed accepted that the increased income is now being spent on children’s education. Around 74% of the people believed that after prohibition they spend more time with family.

An earlier study — Temperance Movement : The Impact of Liquor Prohibition on Socio-Economy and Livelihood in Bihar — conducted last year, had also shown that almost all women, cutting across caste and class, were in support of the liquor ban and did not want it to be revoked.

Bihar to increase greater one-horned rhinos population by 3% annually

The Bihar government has decided to increase the population of greater one-horned rhinos by 3% annually in the state.
The state government has also decided to increase rhino-bearing areas in Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in West Champaran district by 5% in the next two years, an official said.

Decision to increase the population of greater one-horned rhinos by 3% annually was taken at the 3rd Asian Rhino Range Countries Meeting held at Chitwan (Nepal) from February 3 to 5. Five rhino range countries countries -- India, Bhutan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nepal -- signed the Chitwan Declaration for Asian Rhinos Conservation (2023) and agreed on managing the population of the greater one-horned rhinos, Javan and Sumatran rhinos with the intention of achieving at least 3% annual growth in their population.

The VTR has been selected as one of potential sites under the National Rhino Conservation Strategy.

Currently, an adult free-ranging male rhino has been in the VTR for the last two years.

The VTR occupies a core area of 909.86 sq km of the Valmiki Sanctuary located in the West Champaran district of Bihar.

The VTR was established as the 18th tiger reserve in 1990 and ranked fourth in the density of the tiger population. The rivers Gandak and Masan flow through this area.
