From a comrade: Something to keep in mind: umbrellas not only act as aerial shields but also as spears of the phalanx formation. Pointing the pole of an umbrella directly at advancing cops prevents them from throwing themselves at the shield line like that because it would be like tackling a porcupine. The visually obscured space behind the umbrellas also makes them less likely to thrust themselves into the unknown. Wooden shields are not a straight upgrade from umbrellas, both have unique roles in these formations.

Here is a video from #Portland last night showing the pigs charging a shield wall quite effectively. This seems to be their current method when they decide to advance on the plywood shield walls, and it seems to be working.
